Maybe check out this site: Linux Half-Life
That is the guide that I followed when I first learned how to install it.

Depends on if you want to go with the retail version of WineX, use the CVS WineX, or use Wine.

* If you want to use the CVS version of WineX it's as simple as emerge WineX (emerges a
CVS snapshot does not download the latest version from CVS).
* And then there are some small config settings in ~/.winex/config (basically tell it where you mount your cdrom drive to)
* And then you simply just type winex /mnt/cdrom/setup.exe and install it just like windows would.

There are other setting if you want to put the 'fake_windows' drive somewhere else and stuff but what is above is a pretty quick and easy way to get it running. You'll have to install patches but its the same deal 'winex /directory/patchfile.exe' and if you have problems with running hl.exe try 'winex --winver win98 -- hl.exe -console'

As far as WineX retail/Wine installs go, the other methods are basically the same but will involve installing WineX/Wine in a different way obviously. I personally haven't tried Wine yet but I hear it runs HL better than WineX so I probably will eventually.

I have never gotten winex to work well, so I stuck to just plain jane wine in my CS days.

WineX segfaults whenever I try to emulate D3D =(... I think i'm going to go with plain old Wine if it doesn't have the same incompatibility with the ati-drivers.
