Hi all, I'm a former windowz user and well, I used quite a few different games like Starcraft, Age of Empries, Asheron's Call (MMORPG), Command and Conquer, Typhoon Rising, Enemy-Territory...

Now I'm on linux and I play..... Enemy-Territory... anyways...
Any suggested games with decent graphics you can suggest? I personally like Strategy and FPS games...
and money, I don't want to spend it :p Thats why i came to Linux.., not to mention the stability... :-D

Btw, unrelated.. What do I do to use my WinTV card? hehe

Did you re-emerge the NVIDIA drivers after you switched the kernel?

Neverwinter Nights, ut2003, ut2004, Doom3, Return to Castle Wolfenstein - These are all EXCELLENT :D games that run natively under linux... however they are commercial so unless you already own them, you'll have to dish out some $

As far as free games go: Torcs, Wesnoth, Cube, Warsow, Supertux (some of these don't have the greatest graphics, but are loads of fun nontheless)

Also you can play some of your Winblows games under emulation (wine, cedega). I used to run Morrowind and WoW under cedega and they ran better than they ever did under Winblows natively  I don't play these anymore as I got bored of Morrowind (took a LONG time, EXCELLENT game) after I beat the expansions and I stopped being a sucker and dishing out $15 a month to see "login server down" (World of Warcraft). I only buy Linux native now (Thank you Epic and Id for supporting my OS, I will continue to purchase your awesome products).

P.S. Quake4 and Serious Sam2 will also have native linux ports shortly after they come out for M$ systems ($commercial games)

Ok. Then I suggest you first search for a solution, then make a post in the Desktop Environments forum about your problem if you can't find any. Try to include as much relevant information as possible.

Rukie,
I'm running a hardened system with no problems with the nvidia driver or games.
A few things to note, most of the programs that need OpenGL will need their MPROTECT flag disabled since the Nvidia GL libraries were not compiled with PIC (someone correct me here if I'm wrong), also, I'm on a Pentium 4 and having PAGEEXEC enabled gives a serious blow to performance, so if you have a similar setup then you should disable PAGEXEC when configueing your kernel.

For example, suppose you want to run ET. then you need to disable MPROTECT, and since ET was not compiled by you (thus its not compiled with PIC) you will need to use the chpax utililty to disable the MPROTECT flag (otherwise, if you compiled the app with PIC you can you paxctl).
Code:

chpax -m /opt/enemy-territory/et.x86

Let me know if this works for you or not.

Btw, you did recompile your whole system when you switched to a hardened profile right?

I currently have no pax/grsec related options enabled, no rsbac optoins installed, and no selinux options because I'm on a reiser 3.4 filesystem

Also, after I switched to this kernel I had some major trouble with in future modification times n such.. ran a make clean and remade everything, from a livecd boot...

then I ran an emerge -e and I believe pic is enabled in my use flags..

Did you switch to "nv" or to "nvidia"?
In order to use the proprietary driver that will allow you to use 3D to its fullest extent, you need the "nvidia" driver...

nv, not nvidia. I reset my xorg.conf file to nvidia after reemerging nvidia-glx but I'm also doing schoolwork.. so I dont' want to crash this before I print out my stuff :-D

Currently (before changes) they reason why ET doesn' twork is unkown to me, basically the system locks up... i get a black screen, then it shows me the desktop again, but I can't click on anything or.. do anything, I can't even control alt backspace out of x11..

Edit: I also noticed quicktime4linux and xzgv will not emerge.... compile error---but it doesn't give the reason why there's an error! lol

what nvidia drivers where you using ? For whatever reason I always had trouble with the 6629 drivers (I dunno why these are STILL the latest drivers marked stable). Once I switched to the latest drivers (originally 7667, then 7676) by unmasking them I never had any problems. This could be just an amd 64 issue for me tho.
, anyways the 7676 drivers kick <donkey behind>.

Games I play are:

crack-attack
xbubble
flobopuyo
warsow (http://www.warsow.net)

I also played through Half Life 1 and Deus Ex 1 under wine and thoroughly enjoyed them both.

Hardened kernel... Well, you'll have to make some changes then.

1. Switch GCC profile to vanilla GCC.
2. Recompile xorg-x11, but make sure that dlloader and static are disabled before you do so.

This will hopefully change when 7676 of the nVidia drivers become stable and useful. One should be able to compile both xorg-x11 and nvidia-glx with dlloader while using the Hardened GCC... (7676 doesn't work at all on this computer, and using the official ones causes the computer to crash every now and then...)

Also, you might have to change PaX permissions on xorg and all the games (OpenGL applications). For example:

paxctl -PEmRxS /usr/bin/Xorg
paxctl -PEmRxS /usr/games/bin/cube_clinte
paxctl -PEmRxS /usr/bin/glxinfo
paxctl -PEmRxS /usr/bin/glxgears

Etc...

  • Gish (platform game with a physics engine, commercial, demo in portage)
  • Scorched3D
  • Quake3 w/ Tremulous mod (soon to be a standalone game)
  • Savage (fps/rts, kinda commercial? I heard you don't need a cdkey to play anymore)
  • Vendetta Online (mmorpg/fps space shooter, commercial)
  • Neverball

Plus some others people already said, UT2004, wesnoth, SMAC, ET.

Sachankara, I turned on static, but I didn't turn on dll loader (because dll loader said nvidia would work)

Anyways, how do I turn off static for xorg?

Edit: Sweet! After testing my comp out some more.. I can finally mount floppies and cdroms... (Haven't checked dvd's yet)
Unfortunately I still cannot mount my zip drive..

Also, I can't mount blank cdroms.. so how do I mount a blank cdrom and burn iso or copy backups onto a cd-r cdrom
