Hello,
You guys are GREAT!!! - burned the cd from IRIX (xcdroast) rebooted and all is well.
I started running Gentoo on my home pc in early 2002 and loved it.
In the fall of 2003 my boot disk failed - after we moved my pc 'lived' in the HOT garage for the summer.
Around the same time they were scrapping a few Octanes at work so I took a couple home and have been using them since.
I started with the SGI freeware stuff, but after running Gentoo for a while wanted to optimize/compile all the software myself.
I've had some/limited success compiling stuff with gcc - and did not want to go with the Nekochan precompiled packages - they seem to mostly use SGI's compiler???
It would be great if I could run Gentoo on my SGI box for a bit of inet surfing/email reading and some light programming tasks.
Thanks again for all of your hard work - and hopefully in the future I will be able to contirbute to your efforts.
Thanks,
Bill |

I already surf the net from my Indigo2 Impact using remote X.
If you've got IMPACT graphics on your Octane, then you should be set. X works just fine locally on them.
VPro however is another matter -- there's no DMA support for those, and so no ability to efficiently run X. This doesn't stop you grabbing an old Pentium-class box to use as an Xterminal. Octanes still make decent LTSP servers. _________________ Stuart Longland (a.k.a Redhatter, VK4MSL)
I haven't lost my mind - it's backed up on a tape somewhere...
