Hi. I have a sparc system that I'd like to install without a CD. I can boot the install-sparc64-minimal-2005.1.iso image off a swap partition, but the system wants to mount / from the cdrom.
Code:
{3} ok boot disk1:b
Resetting ...

screen not found.
Can't open input device.
Keyboard not present.  Using ttya for input and output.

Sun Enterprise 420R (4 X UltraSPARC-II 450MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.23, 3072 MB memory installed, Serial #16244511.
Ethernet address 8:0:20:a7:f:1, Host ID: 80a70f10.

Rebooting with command: boot disk1:b
Boot device: /pci@1f,4000/scsi@3/disk@1,0:b  File and args:
SILO
// Welcome to Gentoo SPARC Linux //
//         Version 2005.1        //
boot: gentoo-2.4 initrd=/boot/gentoo-2.4.igz root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc looptype=squashfs loop=/livecd.squashfs
Loading initial ramdisk....

Code:
VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly.

boot() ::

I'm not too familiar with SILO. Any help?
Thanks

The LiveCD doesn't expect to be running from something else other than a... well... CD
Use netboot.

I suspect that the image you are booting assumes you are booting from cdrom and is trying to mount it. If you really cannot boot from a cdrom for some reason (like you don't have one), you might consider netbooting instead (I had to do that on one system which could not read the boot cdrom I was trying to use. :wink: ). There are instructions and information at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-sparc-faq.xml , http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-sparc-quickinstall.xml , and at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-sparc-netboot-howto.xml .

(By the way, booting off a swap partition sounds like a bad idea, although I suppose you are not using it for swapping at the same time.)

Hope this helps,
Regards,
Ferris
