Hi guys!

I founded an old pc which has a cyrix 6x86 cpu.
I'd like to use it like an home server/router but I didn't understand if that pc is ok for me.

I want to set up it with dhcp, nat, samba, proxy, amule, print & mail server and maybe it should manage my home wireless network.

So I put livecd 2005.0 into it to begin installation and when I type:
Code:
cat /proc/cpuinfo

it says to me that I have a 486 cpu and most of its features are marked as "unknown" (it's also impossible to determine how many MHz does cpu run!!! 8O )

But a bit of googling I found that cyrix 6x86 is similar to a pentium.

My question are:
1) Is cyrix 6x86 supported by gentoo?
2) Why livecd doesn't recognize this cpu and its features (vendor, name, flags, frequency, etc...)
3) How can I determine its frequency? I'd not want that cpu was too poor an it wasn't able to manage my server and all its services (especially wireless & amule)

Thank you for help!

Bye, Raffaele

The Cyrix 6x86 is a 486 from the software's perspective. Don't worry about it.

Also, the MHz wouldn't tell you very much. Cyrix chips were sold with a "PR" -- performance rating -- because their clock speed was not indicative of their performance.

I discovered that my Cyrix is marked as PR-150, so it's like a Pentium 150MHz, right??

I believe that it is too low system although 256MB of Ram to manage my server, especially amule and print server.
What do you think about it?

PS: thank you guys!

I have an old PR+133, I wouldnt say they're equal to a Pentium 133, more like a P120 or P100 depending on the app. They also run VERY hot and have many issues with that, mine runs best underclocked to a PR+120. at 133 it crashed once a day, at 120 it runs for months. maybe I just needed a bigger fan lol, but it works for me. I was using it with 128mb ram running OpenBSD, worked good as a server, Ive since updraged my house server to a celeron 300a, alot faster :)

HI I love my Gentoo but I also still love my first Linux install-
Freesco
This is a firewall nat print server router and more and runs on a 486 with 8meg mem it also has a forum and community like Gentoo
Forum
and it runs off a floppy or a HD or if you search the forums there is a script for backup to CD.
All the extras like ssh samba and host of others are contributed by users and its package management is simple, based on slackware (zipslack)

I've seen your project and I think it's very cool and I useful but I prefer to use gentoo for my server; first of all because I want to learn how to set up a server (I never did it before) and second once because I understood freesco doesn't really support amule at all.

Although that, good project, I'll remember it for the future...

I think you should take a look at smoothwall.org and forget about running a samba server on that cpu... they were great in their day but alas they don't have supporting parts for good fileserving. You would need to have a PCI IDE card that supported large harddrives and at that price you might as well ebay a dell optiplex gx1 for cheap.
