When I do a
Code:
emerge -p -u world

I get the following reply:
Code:
eagle bin # emerge -u -p world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies |
emerge: there are no masked or unmasked ebuilds to satisfy ">=dev-libs/lxml2-2.4".
eagle bin #

Which tells me that something is wrong... However I do not know what this is, and I also do not know who is referring to this dependency.
In other words: I am lost.
I would appreciate any help getting rid of the problem, which blocks any further activity...

This kind of things come and go. They usually show up after one sync and disappear if you wait some time and sync again.

I presume there is a way to get rid of the problem, however I do not know how... I have been looking at the options of the emerge command, and I also have been 'playing' with qpkg. To no avail however.

Sometimes the portage dependency cache gets fubar'd and this could be the cause of your problems.

To clear the cache:
Code:
rm -r /var/cache/edb/dep/*

Then sync to make sure you have the latest tree and try your world update again:
Code:
emerge sync
emerge world -up

I too had this exact same problem, I kept rsync'ing and it still wouldn't go away.
It wasn't until I did a 'emerge-webrsync' then all my troubles went away.
(note there is no space around the dash)

gl hope it werks for you

Great; the suggestion of CaptnJazz solved the issue.
Apparently I missed the information on the emerge-webrsync command. Where could I have found that ?

Thanks very much !
