Hello everybody.

note: if I'm posting to the wrong list: sorry
please feel free to move this to a better place - could'nt find a good place for this since I don't know if it's CUPS or networking related stuff...

I'm deeply confused since I can't get cups to work and I suspect my host settings or dhcp to cause the trouble.

This machine i'm working on is located at our institute, I have to use a proxy to access the net...

The error message I get when trying to print the testpage with cups reads:
Quote:

ERROR

The requested URL could not be retrieved

While trying to retrieve the URL: http://beavis.ifu.fhg.de:631/printers/Laserjet4plus?

The following error was encountered:

Access Denied
...

I can access the cups localhost:631 menu-page, I can browse the web via our proxy.

My machine is called "beavis". The domain is ifu.fhg.de, but the laserjet is a local printer (parallel port).

The /etc/hosts:
Quote:

127.0.0.1 localhost

The /etc/hostname:
Quote:

beavis

I didn't alter the config files od cups, since I specified my printer details via the web interface.

Quite franckly I don't really understand the locelhost / hosts stuff and since I have to use dhcp I dont't know, if should somewhere specify a line like

beavis.ifu.fhg.de

to describe my box

any help is greatly appreciated

EDIT: just discovered, that "127.0.0.1" gives me apparently the root dir of the proxy-server. Is this normal behavior or might this lead to the problem... ?!?

you said that you have a dynamic ip?

try to add your hostname to localhost in /etc/hosts

Code:

127.0.0.1 localhost beavis
