Alright, I've searched, there are tons of threads on DHCP but none that fully answer my question.
I have Gentoo recognising my eth0, but I can't get an IP. I've checked all my settings against those who have networking, and it all seems to match up. Even when I ping my router I get "connect: Network is unreachable". Is there anything that I can provide that will help?
Thanks |

I take it you are past the "dhcpcd eth0" stage ? _________________ "Mr Thomas Edison has been up on the two previous nights discovering 'a bug' in his phonograph." --Pall Mall Gazette (1889)

Yes, anytime dhcpcd is called the system waits and waits and then I get [!!] <--(denotes failure I assume). |

You are using the /etc/init.d/net.* scripts? Try to get it working manually first. Does it work from the livecd? _________________ "Mr Thomas Edison has been up on the two previous nights discovering 'a bug' in his phonograph." --Pall Mall Gazette (1889)

What happens if you ping localhost?
Also, what's in /etc/resolv.conf? If nothing's there that probably means you forgot to copy it over during the installation (trivial fix, boot the livecd and use it). |

I am currently ping localhost. I get:
Code: | 64 bytes from localhost (127.0.0.1): icmp_seq=137 ttl=64 time=0.065 |
I would not stop.
The contents of /etc/resolve.conf are:
Code: | nameserver 128.100.56.135
nameserver 128.100.102.201
nameserver 128.100.100.128
search wdw-res.utoronto.ca
domain homenetwork |
Yes I am using /etc/init.d/net.* scripts and also trying to start eth0 at runtime.
I don't what you mean by getting it working manually unless you mean by using the above scripts.
Yes internet access does work from the livecd. |

Results in a wait and then tux~#
Trying to emerge pump in the booted Gentoo Enviro results in attempted internet access to download the file. How can I emerge it from the CD (if that's possible)?
Thanks |

Thanks | At any time you can boot your LiveCD, Knoppix, etc. and chroot into your Gentoo installation using the same steps as described in the handbook. For most people, it boils down to Code: | net-setup eth0
hdparm -d 1 /dev/hda
mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/gentoo
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/gentoo/boot
swapon /dev/hda2
mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc
chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
env-update
source /etc/profile |
Once in you can emerge whatever you want. It seems like I'm forgetting a step about networking...I think you have to create a symlink somewhere, so you'll have to read the handbook for that one. I'm tired. |

i have a somewhat similar problem, as of yesterday the dhcp from the adsl modem doesnt work anymore, but the frustrating part is that if i unplug the server and jack in a winXP laptop from my room mate i works instantly! i have copied all info from "ipconfig /all" but even when i enter everything manual (ifconfig eth0 up ip.adr ,nano /etc/resolv.conf) it doesnt work. i even tried the old server(debian) but to no avail... any ideas _________________ using linux since may 2005
