Got an Ultra2 for free. My AthlonXP box that ran Gentoo needs some new parts so I figure I can run my webserver on this. It's 300MHz and has 512MB, so it's good enough, even if it takes a damn long time to bootstrap.
Anyway, my problem is that it's LOUD, especially the HD (4.5GB Seagate ST34572W). I want to upgrade the HD to something maybe 18GB, 10KRPM, and quiet. I have a preference for Fujitsu, or Seagate would be ok... Any suggestions for drives I should look for on Ebay? I don't really want to sink a lot of money into this thing. |

Any 1" 80 pin SCA drive will work, so long as you put it on the sleds from your old drive. I've seen great deals on used Compaq drives. You can find 18g 10k ones on ebay all day long. |

In my experience you're not going to find too many 10K RPM drives that are any quieter than the one in there. _________________ Gentoo systems.

The Fujitsu MAS3184 in my Windows box (the one I'm on) is 15K and is quieter. |

Well, I upgraded to a Seagate 36GB 10K disc and it's much noisier. I don't really mind though.
If you want it to stay quiet, stick with what you've got at the moment, I'd say. _________________ Gentoo/AMD64, shell-tools, net-mail, vim, recruiters

Well the thing to remember is that hard drives have gotten much quieter over the last couple of years. Up until recently, the noise factor of a scsi drive was not a consideration at all. |
