Hello all,
I just upgraded to the new 2.4.20 r1 gentoo sources and I'm getting a kernel panic on boot every single time. It happens right after detecting my IDE devices, and has this line:

Code:

Partition check:
/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0:kernel BUG at sched.c:1131!
invalid operand: 0000
CPU:    0
EIP      0010:[c01168c8>]   Not tainted
EFLAGS:  00010202

(continues with a dump of things, talking about the process swapper, it's line being...)

Code:

Process swapper (pid: 0, stackpage=c0363000)

Then with a stack and call trace that I don't have the patience to type out..

Then:

Code:

<0>Kernel panic: Aiee, killing interrupt handler!
In interrupt handler - not syncing

My old .19r10 kernel still boots/runs fine. Any ideas? Anyone else seeing this? Same config as the old one as well, dual proc MP system.

I had the same problem during installation of 1.4_rc3.

Here's my configuration :
P4 2.4G / Gigabyte 8INXP (7205 chipset)
2X512MB DDR
Elsa Gloria 4 750XG
ST380021A

Hmm...I'm going to guess this is some weird kernel option I have enabled, as did you then..though I couldn't guess what. I just copied over my old .config then menuconfigged it to look over the new options (and save them) Perhaps something new was introduced I was unaware of?

Thanks in advance for anyone with ideas of course...this is on a stable system, by the way. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hmm..due to this bug appearing to exist in the scheduler, I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for what options I might want to try tweaking?

The hardware is a Tyan Tiger MP, 512MB DDR, AMD Athlon MPs, one 1600 and one 1800 for me...

I tried disabling power management after searching through some other kernel panic threads as well at this point, which doesn't seem to do anything. I also attempted to try compiling a uniprocessor kernel, but that fails as well. I'm having no luck with any of this....as always, 19r10 continues to work fine regardless though. I should probably file a bug report, but it appears to be a slightly dynamic error. memtest86 reports no errors...I'm really stuck here. :?

Please help :(

i'm getting the same issue and changing a bunch of options (ACPI, SMP) nothing changes.

i'll be waiting for gentoo-2.4.21 to come out.

just like you, 2.4.19-r10 is nice and stable, and risking anything is not worth it to me.

Thank you for replying, it's nice to know this isn't extremely isolated. I'd like to help debug it, but I'm not sure what exactly would be helpful. I suppose I'll wait for .21 as well. (or r2+ of .20 anyway)

Mods/Debuggers: Would my full .config be helpful for anything?

It appears that this might have something to do with SCSI emulation on IDE devices, could the other people who have had this problem post here if they have SCSI emulation active on the IDE bus?

UPDATE: Removing SCSI entirely doesn't seem to have helped anything...I'm going to keep playing around with it a bit. :x

Anyone with ANY ideas on this, please post. :?

Code:

Partition check:
/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0:kernel BUG at sched.c:1131!
invalid operand: 0000

In my case, the first partition of the first HDD is NTFS for Windows XP.
Didn't this cause the problem in my guess?

Well, I'm fairly sure it doesn't matter what is on the actual partition, as I run a Linux only machine with, well, Linux on that partition, ext2. So it's something else. I'm going to post my kernel config in the following message and file a bug report, see if we can't get some light shed on this.

It's a bug in the source code itself, it look like... It was probably introduced by a patch. My guess would be that 2.4.20 doesn't like one of the scheduling patches like low-latency or preempt.

From the bug report after some build testing:

Quote:

I'd assume that your IDE controller is probably not supported by the 'old IDE core' the xfs-sources have the 'new IDE core' in them. Until you see a note in the gentoo-sources changelog to the effect of including the new IDE core, OR they are updated to a 2.4.21 version, stick to the XFS sources on this hardware.

I wound up having the same problem last night with the Kernel panic and the infamous "Aiee" line... (using the gentoo-sources) The thing is, I built my kernel on Tuesday, and I had rebooted a few times between then and last night. It seemed to work fine. I noticed, though, that it happened ONLY after I got KDE and ALSA installed. That's when it gave me the problem... Even rebuilding the kernel didn't help. I wish I could narrow it down between the two, but unfortunately I didn't do any rebooting after installing KDE... only after ALSA. I don't know if that has any bearing on what anyone else has done or seen, but I just thought I'd throw that one in there...

I had the same problem. The solution was really easy: Disable 'FramebufferSupport' and
'Video mode selection support'

It's not related to the low latency or prempt patches (i can't even compile with prempt turned off).

i tried disabling framebuffer to no avail. not sure if i diabled video mode select or not. I'll have to try again.

And it's got nothing to do with frame buffer and video mode select either.

;)

Is there a gentoo sources 2.4.21 yet? I like to use gentoo sources, but apparently I can't (according to the bug filed). For whatever reason my IDE is busted with 2.4.20.

Now I'm upset. I just emerged xfs-sources and tried them. Same error.

I've tried everything I can think of. I've take out frame buffers, video select, low taency, preempt. nothing unusual. Still dead.

UPDATE: I tell a lie. You can't remove the preemptive kernel option for gentoo or xfs sources 2.4.20_r2. The kernel wont compile if you do.

Next up: trying 2.4.19

I had several lockups yesterday with gentoo-sources, 2.4.20-r1, and scp.

My sollution was to emerge gentoo-sources 2.4.20-r2

I haven't had lockups anymore since then.

unfortunately I've tried 2.4.20_r2

2.4.19_r10 works.

Bloody Bastard: These aren't lockups, it's a failure to boot due to the "new" IDE code in the latest gentoo sources, also still in 2.4.20-r2.

I also tested 2.4.20-r2 to no avail. Still broken, and will be until it's noted in the changelog (as was said in the bug report)

Cheers,
-Dal

But I had lockups in the same sched.c, so I thought they could be related.

Ah, right. I don't think it actually has to do with that code exactly though, more likely it's friends. At any rate, I'm quite glad to hear it's working for some people now. :) Still broken for me, but I love this distro too much to give up. Maybe I should try kernel hacking...looks pretty daunting though. Lots of "black magic" 8O

The only way I could get a working kernel was to go back to 2.4.19_r10 gentoo-sources. Worked first compile after that.
