After installing Gentoo over an existing Windows XP installation, I had the following partition layout:
Code:
Partition    Size  id      FS   Mounted on
/dev/hda1     5Gb   C   fat32           C:
/dev/hda2   128Mb  83    ext2        /boot
/dev/hda3   512Mb  82    swap         swap
/dev/hda4    rest   5
/dev/hda5   512Mb  83    ext3            /
/dev/hda6    10Gb  83    ext3        /home
/dev/hda7     8Gb  83    ext3         /usr
/dev/hda8     4Gb  83    ext3         /var

I used GRUB to successfully boot into Gentoo, but after booting into Windows XP and shutting down again, GRUB stage 1.5 gave me an Error 17.

I used the LiveCD to startup again, and I used fdisk on /dev/hda. It showed only the first four primary partitions, all except the first had their id changed.

Code:
Partition    Size  id
/dev/hda1     5Gb   C
/dev/hda2   128Mb  93
/dev/hda3   512Mb  92
/dev/hda4    rest  15

It seems that XP added 10 to the partition id's of the non-FAT partitions. What can I do to avoid a complete re-installation of Gentoo? (I have a Pentium II, and I built the system from scratch, which took well over 72 hours.)

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forums.

This seems very strange! I've never seen this. Assuming that your problem is just with the partition types, boot with the live-cd. Then start fdisk and change the flags for hda2, hda3 and hda4 to what they were.
Do you need more detailed instructions?
