Weird Compile Error

I have an odd problem. Whenever I use portage to install the base packages for Gentoo I get to a point, and then my system completely powers off, as if someone pulled the plug in the middle of my compile. I'm using 2005.1 and this error occurs for both the bootstrap.sh and stage3 instllation, so I don't think it has to do with a particulary package, but it could I guess.

I have: HP nx9010 laptop Pentium 4-M (3.03GHz)

Any ideas?

Sounds to me like a heat issue. Make sure your CPU fan is working, as well as your power supply fan.

software wouldnt make it just randomly shut off
is your laptop on you lap and covering the exhaust, or as jholz7 said something might be broke

It might occur when your power supply doesn't supply enough power.

In other words, if your PSU can deliver up to 350W but your system might require 400W. You might not have noticed this sooner because most desktop systems don't require your system to go to their maximum potential (for instance, when you just install and run Windows, the system absorbs 320W). When you're playing 3D games or installing Gentoo, your system will suddenly require more power which your PSU can't deliver.

If that is the case, you need to install a new PSU that delivers more power.

Yeah, compiling can certainly ramp up the power use. Sounds silly, but maybe you can test this by unplugging unnecessary hardware & retrying, seeing if it goes ok? (e.g. optical drive(s), gfx card power if applicable, USB cup warmers, etc...)
