I thought that they were going to include where we could change the screen resolution and color depth on the fly, like in windows.

Hey, emerged it... it works nice.
Just 2 questions:
1) Is there a way to make those cursors a bit smaller? (I like the looks but hate the size)
2) In what way could I make my own? (I'd preffer a traslucent green to go with my desktop, plus I could perhaps solve the question n. 1 if no other way is possible)

Ok, I got those nice transparent cursors without asking, now I lost them with 4.3.0, but I guess I understood how to get them back. But what I really miss is being able to switch terrminals or X sessions with Ctrl-Alt-Fx!!! Why is it gone? How can I get it back? It's not a key binding issue, since Ctrl-Alt-Del works and F-keys work, too.

BTW, to all those who got a slow X start, re-emerge fontconfig, that's likely to fix your problem.

Yes. Just create a launcher icon on your gnome panel :)

Hey guys. According to the output below, emerge -u xfree wants to upgrade my GCC. Any ideas why?

root@glorfindel abri # export ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"
root@glorfindel abri # emerge -up xfree

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild U ] sys-devel/gettext-0.11.5-r1 [0.11.5]
[ebuild U ] sys-apps/texinfo-4.5 [4.3-r1]
[ebuild U ] sys-libs/zlib-1.1.4-r1 [1.1.4]
[ebuild U ] sys-devel/gcc-3.2.2-r1 [3.2.2]
[ebuild U ] sys-libs/glibc-2.3.2_pre1 [2.3.1-r2]
[ebuild U ] sys-devel/m4-1.4p-r1 [1.4p]
[ebuild U ] sys-libs/db-3.2.9-r2 [3.2.9-r1]
[ebuild U ] sys-devel/perl-5.8.0-r10 [5.8.0-r9]
[ebuild U ] dev-libs/expat-1.95.5-r1 [1.95.4]
[ebuild U ] media-libs/freetype-2.1.3-r2 [2.1.2-r2]
[ebuild U ] media-libs/fontconfig-2.1-r1 [2.1]
[ebuild U ] x11-base/xfree-4.3.0 [4.2.1-r2]
[ebuild U ] sys-devel/autoconf-2.57 [2.54]
[ebuild U ] x11-libs/xft-2.0.1-r1 [2.0.1]

Thanks!

Its because when ~x86 is active and you update, it assumes you want to update everything in the dependency tree of the package to the current unstable levels. leave off "-u" and everything will be fine.

yeah, i also merged it without -u, but simply "emerge /usr/portage[...]4.3.0.ebuild" and it works fine.

but btw: why are all those people having problems switching to their terminals? here this works fine... never got any change in functionality by upgrading x.

From: /etc/X11/XF86Config.example
Quote:

# Uncomment this to disable the <Crtl><Alt><Fn> VT switch sequence
# (where n is 1 through 12). This allows clients to receive these key
# events.

# Option "DontVTSwitch"

# Uncomment this to disable the <Crtl><Alt><BS> server abort sequence
# This allows clients to receive this key event.

# Option "DontZap"

# Uncomment this to disable the <Crtl><Alt><KP_+>/<KP_-> mode switching
# sequences. This allows clients to receive these key events.

I don't have these options in my XF86config, and have no problems.

1) put this line in your .Xdefaults:
Code:
Xcursor.size: 16

2) If you make your own, you can use this line toi set it in your .Xdefault:
Code:
Xcursor.theme: whiteglass
. Check out the dir
Code:
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/

it contains some cursors and you can take one of them as example and change them to your like. (redglass for example)

hope this helps.

Hm, i didn't need to reemerge fontconfig. It starts slow the first time only. After that it starts as normal.

Did someone comment the line "strip" to make sure that you're CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS are used. I did and it copmiled without problems and I haven't any stability problems so far.

i think the line
Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"

is very important.
after add this to make.conf,u can update to xfree4.3 very smoothly[/code]

Hearing all these comments makes me think I'm the only one who feels that the cursors are incredibly ugly. 8O

And I'm noticing no difference between 4.2.x and 4.3, but I guess that will happen later when programmers start using 4.3's new features or something.

but why ugly? the whiteglass cursors look like in windows plus that they are transparent. they are not too big or something. and for those who find them too big there is the (IMHO too small) notebook cursor...

@new features: are there any but new drivers, the resolution tool and Xcursor?

If you have just a temporary goal to use TILDA just for Xfree-4.3 then don't change it it in /etc/make.conf. Instead use it in the command line:
Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86 emerge x11-base/xfree/xfree-4.3.0.ebuild

It may safe you from other unstable packages.

will it now finally be possible to write a terminal application that features REAL transparancy (not a fake one like aterm)? Or is alpha blending only used for the mouse cursors?

1) I tried that already but I wasn't very observing yesterday night: It comes out that while X on its own follows that specification (and so do kde, waimea, whatever else), if I load gnome or just gnome-settings-daemon (which I do, since otherwise gtk2 apps with AA look ugly as hell) the pointer reverts to the original huge scale. Of course the gnome "control" refers to the old Xcursors so there is no - at least obvious - way to convince gnome to stay off the pointer's size. Once again, the gnome devs demonstrate their will to mess with the whole world and dog, go down under and reinvent the wheel. This is getting tiring. Any ideas?

2) The old cursors were supposed to be simple bitmaps if I understand correctly so it would not be a problem making your own. But on the new ones I get this:
Code:

file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/redglass/cursors/right_ptr
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/redglass/cursors/right_ptr: GLS_BINARY_LSB_FIRST

Obviously you can't simply open it with an icon editor (or can you? Gimp fails...)

Thanks anyway...

I think that currently alpha blending is only supported for the cursors but it will be implemented for the windows too in future releases.

I don't have these options in my XF86config, and have no problems.

When I upgraded to 4.3.0, my XF86Config file was left untouched, and indeed it didn't contain the "DontVTSwitch" line, while the "DontZap" part was completely commented, like in the example. Now I generated a new config file, properly configured it, those lines are commented, but still I can't switch terminals or restart X. I'm confused. Is some other config file overriding the one I'm editing? I don't think so, since it's placed in /etc/X11 and - assuming it would work that way - I got none in my home dir.

Any hints? Thanks.

Hey! Why is everyone complaining about the redglass cursor so goddamn much?? I kinda like it! Much better then boring windows cursor (or the black imitation of windowscursor in X). Give it a go guys!
Or...it's about right theme on the whole desktop..I can understand the a red pointer just *doesn't* feet with all themes avalible for KDE/flux/GNOME...
Cheers!

@qnx: well, i run a very light and technolike theme compilation, so a goodlooking white or whiteshaded cursor is imho best for me

@all that want to edit cursors...
i found this:
[~] > xcursorgen --help
usage: xcursorgen [-Vh] [--version] [--help] [-p <dir>] [--prefix <dir>] [CONFIG [OUT]]
Generate an Xcursor file from a series of PNG images

Maybe this is what you're looking for. Its distributed with xfree.
