I am sorry for following up late on this and also being slightly off topic as well, but I get
1024x768 with the vesa driver on this 845 based machine I have at work. Just check your
BIOS and see how much shared memory you are allocating as video RAM. I guess you are
at present giving it only 4 MB.

For all you i845/i830/i810 people out there. 4.3.0 has support for your chipset, I'm currently using it and have direct rendering enabled too.
If you need instructions on how to configure it, check Intel® 830M/845G/852GM/855GM/865G Driver for XFree86
Here are the steps I use, also necessary after installing a new kernel.
1. ebuild /usr/portage/x11-base/xfree/xfree-4.3.0.ebuild compile
2. cd /var/tmp/portage/xfree-4.3.0/work/xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/os-support/linux/drm/kernel
3. # make -f Makefile.linux i830.o
# modprobe agpgart
# rmmod i830
# insmod i830.o
That should be it!
Restart the Xserver and type 'glxinfo' to verify that you have direct rendering enabled.

If you already has a fully functional X installation, just take a copy of your config file, /etc/X11/XF86Config if you fear loosing it. A new X installation will not overwrite the file (I just upgraded from 4.2.99 to 4.3.0 without a hitch).

Well, the machine I have at work is a br0kenHat machine. I have left XFree 4.3.0 to compile
at home and will check it up later. There shouldn't be any problems with the nVidia drivers
going by the posts on this topic. Thanks for the information and the link.

I'm setting up a Dell Latitude C400, which uses the i830M chipset. I followed your instructions above and got it to work. Thanks for posting them, because I was having trouble.
However, even though it's working, it's not working very well. Performance is very sluggish, startup time is EXTREMELY long, and overall it just doesn't feel right. I already had this same laptop configured for X and KDE with RedHat 8.0, and it worked great. Here, however, it's a dog. Any idea what could be causing this?
I'm including my XF86Config file, just in case that helps. Thanks.

i tried this few mins ago and it works, since the cursorxp themes are simple packages with png images inside. the script just converts the describing index file. and it looks quite nice
now i only have to figure out how this transparency works. shadows are controlled my the lill perl script.
tipp: you have to start the script from within the decompressed cursorxp theme dir. at least this is the easiest way. |

Its because when ~x86 is active and you update, it assumes you want to update everything in the dependency tree of the package to the current unstable levels. leave off "-u" and everything will be fine. |
does it matter if you upgrade your GCC *i did it by mistake:/* _________________ Some people go to counselling,

top to see what's using what. use man top to see what all the fields mean. RSS is the field that corresponds to the amount of RAM being used, SIZE is the complete footprint of the process - stack space, code size, etc, etc. |

I believe no-one can quarantee that xfree4.3 will work for you but AFAIK it should be quite safe. I read somewhere that the newest mandrake's beta use xfree-4.3 too. |

I have just merged X 4.3 on my machine (Gentoo 1.4 rc_2, ARCH=~x86, GeForce3) and it
works great. I am using nVidia drivers. Compiled with gcc-3.2.1-r3 (which was unmasked at
that time but is now masked again and so I have -r1, but then I compiled it with -r3).

Indeed 4.3.0 is stable, the latest Slack release uses 4.3.0, along with quite a few of the more recent packaged (KDE 3.1, Gnome 2.2, kernel 2.4.2) |

Does anyone have the problem where the Xfree startup cursor gets "stuck" on the screen after starting xfree 4.3? I have the new cursors enabled, and they look great, but when I startup the old cursor is used, the one that looks like a big black X.
Anyway, after logging in, wherever my mouse is when Gnome starts up, that big black X is stuck there for the entire session, even flipping in and out of Xfree via Alt+Fx. This happens on my laptop, so maybe it is because I have 2 mice (trackpad and usb, and moving either moves the one cursor on my screen, and does not affect the big X), and maybe Xfree forgets to turn off the cursor or whatever when it switches over to the new, nicer, alpha blended cursor (whiteglass). Anyway, it's very annoying, because usually I'm not paying attention and then I've left my mouse in the center of the screen while starting up, and I have to see it there for the whole session unless I log out (and sometimes have to restart). At the least, it makes it very hard to read notes, etc.
Nothing comes on top of this big X in my screen, not the current mouse cursor, nor any window. It does not go away on a screen saver.
Anyone else experience this? Is there a way to refresh, or restart the cursor? _________________ -Phil Crosby |

=P Laptop/LCD. That cursor problem forced me to downgrade to 4.2.1; I'll try the 4.3 on my desktop machine, perhaps I can then isolate it to the laptop. _________________ -Phil Crosby |
