I think you might be confusing Alsa and Arts.
Alsa provides low level sound drivers - it isn't related to the the window manager or desktop environment you are running.
Arts is KDE's sound server, which runs over the top of Alsa or OSS to add additional capabilities - like software mixing so more than one app can make sound at the same time.
Gnome's Arts equivelent is Esound (ESD). It also runs on top of either Alsa or OSS.
So, assuming you have sound working at the driver level (either standard OSS, or Alsa), then ESD should work fine in Gnome (and is installed by default). |

I've got yet another question :
i have Gnome installed, OSS drivers are compiled into the kernel. XMMS plays the music I throw at it, but Gnome itself is totally silent. No click or sound.
Esound is installed (but it shows up as the Enlightenment Sound Deamon).
Any obvious things I can check to see why it's not working ? This is what I found in the .gnomerc-errors in my home dir :
Code: |
esd: Esound sound daemon already running or stale UNIX socket
/tmp/.esd/socket
This socket already exists indicating esd is already running.

Any clues would be more than welcome |

Try recompiling esound with USE="-alsa" and/or USE="oss", since it seems to be trying to do alsa stuff and ignoring oss. |
