I have been digging through the forums and figured out that I need to compile sound into to the kernel for it to work.

I believe that is "working" as dmesg shows audio0 being configured.

Code:
audio0: cs4231a(eb2) at 1fff1200000 irq 13,7e3

audio0 ends up being a directory in /dev. I can't cat anything to it(tells me its a directory) and KDE doesn't like it.
I do not have any other sound support compiled(module or otherwise)

From the looks of it, this seems to be a sticking point for alot of people and I can't seem to figure it out. I have tried the esound driver but that doesn't work (xmms) either.

Anyone got any ideas?

How are you managing your /dev directory? I'm running DevFS on sparc-sources-2.4.30, and I get
Code:
# ls -dl /dev/au*
lr-xr-xr-x  1 root root 11 Jul 11 16:20 /dev/audio -> sound/audio
lr-xr-xr-x  1 root root 14 Jul 11 16:20 /dev/audioctl -> sound/audioctl

# ls -l /dev/sound/
crw-rw----  1 root audio 14, 4 Jan  1  1970 audio
crw-rw----  1 root audio 14, 7 Jan  1  1970 audioctl
crw-rw----  1 root audio 14, 3 Jan  1  1970 dsp
crw-rw----  1 root audio 14, 5 Jan  1  1970 dspW
crw-rw----  1 root audio 14, 0 Jan  1  1970 mixer
crw-rw----  1 root audio 14, 6 Jan  1  1970 status

What is in your /dev/audio0 directory? Is it something like the above contents of my /dev/sound? In that case, you are probably just missing the symlinks.

In the kernel, I have only the stuff under "Linux/SPARC audio subsystem" selected, nothing under "Sound". The result looks like an OSS device to userspace.

Well I have the sound dir in /dev already and it looks like what you have posted. Otherwise audio0 is empty.

I did kind of a half stage3 half stage2 install and I think that might be one thing that could be causing problems.

Gonna start over and try it again.

cs4231 doesn't work well (or at all) with 2.6 kernels FYI.

Hi zachula,

did you get any further? I have run into exactly the same problem with my Ultra 10.
