I'm a newbie to wireless lan/airport etc, but is airport actually its own standard (ie - airport will only connect to airport), or will it connect to any 802.11b-compatible wireless device (such as a LinkSys Wireless Access Point)?

Is AirPort just the name that apple have given to their implementation of 802.11b?

Airport is just standard 802.11b wireless hardware... you can use 3rd party cards to
connect to it, and you can connect to 802.11b networks with your airport card.
