Hello, ok have managed to get hold of some 2 u server with specs:
dual 700
1gb ram
Tyan S1832D motherboard
Although these come from company datacenter and are like new i will ne refurbishing them with:
New ball bearing fans
2x40gb 7500 new hard drives.
Question is how best to use in rackspace? noting that i am new to rackspace setup.
Was thinking something like this:
server one
Attached to main rack net cable and then to NetGear FS526T switch
shared Firewall
local sync server
httpd replicator
server monitoring / bandwidth - mtrg etc
possible backup space
any other suggestiong for its use
other severs mixture of shared hosting and unmanaged dedicated gentoo servers.
Now the idea of umanaged gentoo servers raises couple of questions for me as most people who would want a gentoo server are gentoo users and from what i have sen they are more hands on than the average dedicated server user, so what sort of build to offer them?
Option 1
Boot live cd let them do it?
probel with this is i will not be able to do this in rack, would only be able to do it via cable connection in office, would also have to wait untill ordered install thentake to datacenter.
Option 2
Do basic stage 3 plus netwotking options install setup in rack
Option 3
As 2 but also install webserver services, control panel (DTC) secure box, install update scripts and stage4 creation script
For stage3 install i have been using jackass project without any problems so would go with this for stage3 install.
The other question would be disk layout, now this not an issue for option 1 but for others i would go for:
On software raid 1 partitions
boot
/
/usr
/var
On software raid 0
/var/lib/mysql
/home (or /var/www)
Now filesystem setup is very personal but was going to go with
/home reiserfs
/var/lib/mysql xfs
rest ext3
Now i know some may prefer all on raid1 or maybe all on one disk with one as backup.
As gentoo users what setup would prefer for rental of dedicated server ?
