This is what I get when I try to upgrade jpeg-mmx:

/bin/install -c -m 644 jconfig.h /usr/include/jpeg-mmx/jconfig.h
ACCESS DENIED open_wr: /usr/include/jpeg-mmx/jconfig.h
/bin/install: cannot create regular file `/usr/include/jpeg-mmx/jconfig.h': Permission denied
make: *** [install-headers] Error 1

!!! ERROR: media-libs/jpeg-mmx-0.1.6-r1 failed.
!!! Function src_install, Line 39, Exitcode 2
!!! headers
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.

Hmm maybe not the cleanest way but you could try to emerge it with the sandbox disabled

Code:
FEATURES="-sandbox" emerge ...

hm disabling the sandbox doesn't seem a good idea to me

AFAIK:The sandbox prevents writes outside the build dirs, temp dirs and a few others during the build. If there is a violation, either the ebuild has a bug or their is something wrong with the system

With o without USE="-sandbox"

emerge -uDa jpeg-mmx

Code:

>>> Test phase [not enabled]: media-libs/jpeg-mmx-0.1.6-r1
>>> Install jpeg-mmx-0.1.6-r1 into /var/tmp/portage/jpeg-mmx-0.1.6-r1/image/ category media-libs

The problems seems to be:

Code:
/bin/install: cannot create regular file `/usr/include/jpeg-mmx/jconfig.h': No such file or directory

Wheter u use sandbox or not. Maybe have a look at bugs.gentoo.org and check if there's already a bug. If not you could create one.

What did I do wrong?

I replaced the line, now I get this error:

Code:
creating ./config.status
creating Makefile
creating jconfig.h
/usr/portage/media-libs/jpeg-mmx/jpeg-mmx-0.1.6-r1.ebuild: line 32: --enable-shared: command not found

!!! ERROR: media-libs/jpeg-mmx-0.1.6-r1 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 33, Exitcode 127
!!! configure failed
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.

This is the relevant part of the ebuild:
Code:
src_compile() {
        econf \
                --includedir='${prefix}/include/jpeg-mmx' \
                --enable-shared \
                --enable-static \
                || die "configure failed"
        emake || die "make failed"
}

Any help appreciated. :)
