TV mute turns audio on

I just got a BTTV848 card. I grabbed a cable, connected the line out to my sound card's line in, and I heard the audio. So far, so good. When I start tvtime, or any other TV app, however, the audio becomes muted, and it returns when I mute it through the app. After exiting, audio returns. This wouldn't be a huge problem if tvtime didn't display "mute" on the screen, and I'm not too fond of the other apps. Does anyone know what might be going on here? (I'm using ALSA, BTW.)
