I've been trying to do a fresh install, and everything was going peachy until I emerge --sync 'd. The Manifest for gcc in the portage tree reads:

...
MD5 7d11d9fe1a391fb6b14b8b07852a6374 gcc-3.4.4.ebuild 5006
MD5 1cc5f2fcbc1f6dc2a7ed43ca14b6ed9c gcc-4.1.0_beta20050730.ebuild 1525
MD5 b5774f75bb651dcfb7654cd186938c99 gcc-3.4.3.20050110-r2.ebuild 5191
....

BUT THERE'S NO EBUILD FOR gcc 4.10 beta ! At least not in the portage tree, and at least NOT anymore. So needless to say, everytime I try to emerge gcc (I happen to be using amd64 stable, so it's /sys-devel/gcc-3.4.3-r1) emerge dumps me this:

>>> emerge (16 of 98) sys-devel/gcc-3.4.3-r1 to /
!!! Files listed in the manifest do not exist!
gcc-4.1.0_beta20050730.ebuild
files/digest-gcc-4.1.0_beta20050730

Well, the only good thing I can say is that for once it's not my fault:) Now my question is, other than waiting for someone to put the ebuild and it's md5 back into the tree, can i edit Manifest??? But it's also PGP signed (SHA1 hashed at the end) so how would I generate a new hash for it, and will that work?

Thanks for any insight!

Edit: Changed title from "Somebody messed up gentoo-portage/sys-devel/gcc/Manifest !!!", and stuck temporarily. --Maedhros (15/08/2005)
Edit2: Unstuck as it's apparently not a problem anymore. --Maedhros (28/10/2005)

J-M,

I'm defineately sync'ed up. This is from 7:28PM EDT:

Anyway, the fact remains that the manifest lists gcc 4.10beta but if you do a directory listing on /gcc off any rsync mirror there is no ebuild for it.... I'm still stuck as to what to do, b/c even if i ignore gcc for the moment (I'm trying to re-emerge it as part of the stage 1/3 install, and i'm already up-to-date with 3.4.3-r1, i just haven't recomiled gcc with it's uptodate-self yet), I still can't emerge system (gcc is defined in the "system" class, etc.), and there's no parameter to emerge which tells it to ignore files missing from the manifest. Would you have any suggestions? Thanks!

Your mirror sucks then. Sorry, there is no such thing in the manifest, change your mirrors.

Resolved, my rsync mirror did suck and so I guess from here on out I won't be using namerica anymore. I did, however, find the botched Manifest in a couple of mirrors, one such example would be hamakor.org Thanks J-M!

Good that it works now. If those mirrors are really outdated, you should file a bug about them.

Well, the correct Manifest is definitely in the tree. I removed the old snapshot last night. If you can, please open a bug on https://bugs.gentoo.org so the mirrors can get looked into. Ensure the problem still exists after doing an emerge sync.

I'm glad you posted this! I ran into exactly the same problem myself.
I'm in the process of re-syncing with the default rsync server now. Is that going to work? Could you post the server you used to get it working?
This is my first gentoo install and I'm starting from stage 1, so wish me luck!

Thanks again!

The Australian one WAS broken before too. An emerge --sync fixed it though :D

I want to try rsync'ing with a different server but they all say:
Code:
>>>
>>> Timestamps on the server and in the local repository are the same.
>>> Cancelling all further sync action. You are already up to date.
>>>

How can I temporarily disable the timestamp check when running emerge --sync?

[EDIT] Doesn't matter - I'm syncing fine with rsync.gentoo.org now!

People are also having trouble with the Manifest for dev-libs/libIDL, and www-client/mozilla containing files that don't exist.

It seems that the main rsync mirror is fine (rsync.gentoo.org) but there are a lot of problems with using third party mirrors, i.e. rsync.<country>|<continent>.gentoo.org at the moment. The Gentoo mirror admins are aware of the problem and are working to fix it.

I have been having the same problem as most of you with using the other rsync location, but when I use the following code, I have an error and cannot connect to rsync.gentoo.org:

SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"

but get the following error:

>>> starting rsync with rsync://64.127.121.98/gentoo-portage...
>>>checking server timestamp ...
rsync: failed to connect to 64.127.121.98: Connection refused
rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at clientserver.c(88)
>>> retry ...

What does this mean, and how do I fix it?

Keep trying.

I got this error yesterday evening, tried this morning and worked.

RSYNC line in make.conf is quoted?

As I posted in a thread that got duped. If you are doing an install and cannot get past this kind of problem, do not emerge --sync, use a previous snapshot. You can always emerge --sync after you are up and running with a complete system. Of course an earlier snapshot may also have a problem.....

My 2 cents.

Tried europe, namerica, samerica and got the "out of date" message on all of the ones tried.

rsync.gentoo.org is refusing connections.

Looks like the rsync mirror network is fried at the moment.

:-(

And I _finally_ got my recent network connection problems resolved too. Well, I guess I have to wait a little longer.

To get around the problem with mozilla do:

Code:

# rm /usr/portage/www-client/mozilla/mozilla-1.7.11-r2.ebuild
# ebuild /usr/portage/www-client/mozilla/mozilla-1.7.11-r1.ebuild digest

This will allow you to continue.

Eh, it works, but it isn't a particularly safe thing to do. The warning is there to show that something has gone wrong with that package somewhere. Rebuilding the digest will get rid of the warning, but it may not fix the cause of the problem if it's not the manifest that was broken in the first place.

Changing your SYNC line in /etc/make.conf to SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" and resyncing should fix the problems until the mirrors are sorted out.

The simplest way is "rm /usr/portage/metadata/timestamp.chk".
