Hi,
Wengophone supposed to have all the features to replace skype (which is problematic for its closedness.)

http://www.openwengo.com/ recently released beta version of (SIP) softphone available for debian and fedora. I'll try to get it work on gentoo.

Has anyone any experience with this product? On M$ product perhaps. I would try it myself, but I fortunatelly don't use any of the M$ products myself :D .

I'll report any progress,

Martin

Hi,
I'm testing it at the moment. Better sound quality than skype! Volume is better and the voice is clear.

It's a very new project so it doesn't have all features running yet.
Future: http://www.openwengo.com/support/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19
FAQ: http://www.openwengo.com/support/forum/viewtopic.php?p=36#36

Todo: "As we go, new features will appear: centralized contact lists, PIM synchronisation, file transfers, skin support, conference calls (with both voice and video), dynamic QoS management, user search engine, and much more..."

Conference call would be a big plus...then I would directly uninstall skye!

Seems to be a very cool thing!

I did not find a way to open the url from wengophone to register an account. Does anyone know the direct link? I suppose the accounts for pure voip are free (as in beer).

By the way: building from svn did not work for me. Two errors encountered:
1. Scons complainig about some python imports. Corrected by re-emerging scons, which did the following:
* Cleaning orphaned Python bytecode from /usr/lib/python2.1/site-packages ..
* Cleaning orphaned Python bytecode from /usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages ..
* Cleaning orphaned Python bytecode from /usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages ..
2. Many qt errors - includes, wrong subclassing etc. Probably they're playing around with the sources, but that's to be expected with svn.

Looking forward to making my online calls with wengophone in the future.

Cheers,
geta

There's a new ebuild in portage for wengophone (~x86)

net-im/wengophone-1.0_pre20060106

However, when I try to emerge it I get the following error:

Quote:

I've emerged wengophone, but I can't seeim to figure out how to create an account. I click the "Don't have an account?" link on the login window and it takes me to I webpage that asks for a email address and user name. After doing that it takes me to another page that tells me that in order to open an account I have to download the software and click on the link on the login window. How do I get out of this circle?

EDIT: Nevermind, I found a way. Just click on one of the "forgot your password?" links on the website, enter your email address, and wengo will send a newly generated password.

EDIT: Well, no, that didn't work. The password that wengo sent me doesn't work. Any suggestions?

I just got Wengo working, and it's worth the trouble, clearer than Skype. It took me three or four days to get it working correctly. If you have a problem, post it in the forum. They will come back to you within 24r hours.

Hi Just checking out Wengophone I emerged it on an AMD 64 system (it is masked by missing keyword btw) without problem. However it crashes when I try and do anything. I get this from the console:
Login: anwser received
Login: login received

set proxy port :5060
* Closing connection #0
$$ server response code : 200
HTTPTUNNEL MODE=0

PA :: getWaveInDeviceId(), found input device id 0 for /dev/dsp (/dev/dsp)
** Register and initialize null audio driver
/usr/bin/wengophone: line 10: 25698 Killed ./wengophone

Any ideas?

unlink problem solved for me by downgrading scons from scons-0.96.91 back to scons-0.96.1
maby it will solve your problem too.

Pinr,

Same problem here. Also on amd64 platform, but I read about people with x86 platform having the same problem. Pinr posted this on wengophone community forum. Is this gentoo specific or a just circumstance of alpha state? Does anybody have a solution?

Here's a link to pinr's post on the wengo forum:
http://www.openwengo.com/support/forum/viewtopic.php?t=575

A solution would be great - not just because of oss and ebay ;) - skype lacks video in linux :(

Hi I think this is a specific AMD64 problem yes I know someone on the wengo forum posted a similar error on x86, but I think it is unrelated. So far I haven't progressed at all with this. I have tried the ebuild plus the svn source of the 1.0 and trunk branches and I get different errors each time. If I compile with Alsa rather than os I get an alsa error the svn 1.0 branch give the same error as the ebuild and the trunk branch won't log on. I'd love to get this sorted I have Wengophone working on my x86 laptop and it is great definetly a Skype killer as not only is it open source but it also has video.

Hi everyone,

At the moment this problem is being worked on. To monitor the progress you can look at the trac page for the ticket created for this problem:

I changed the gcc profile to vanilla, and it worked.

I think I've just solved this one by:

emerge --unmerge --ask scons
rm -r /usr/lib/scons
emerge -av1 scons

(Quite whether scons will work again now all the python bytecode is back remains to be seen)

No, there is no ebuild at the moment. The problem is, it is only in svn and most features are still broken. But expect an OpenWengo firefox extension for gnu/linux soon!

Missing-keyword masked ebuild? Who cares?
I just downloaded the video-enabled .deb file - extracted it - extracted the data tgz within - copied the contents of the /usr /bin /share and /lib folders within the data directory to my root /usr directories and hey 8O presto it looks like it actually works. I get a gray image in the configuration when I try to preview video, but the camera lights up with a red just like when i view it in xawtv, so i guess i'm pretty close to getting that working as well.
I'm on a 2.6.15 kernel amd64, kde, with a pwc webcam.

Now if only the new user registration at wengo would stop saying unknown error... so i could set up a second account and test.
[EDIT: Ah. "Unknown Error!" is because you can only register one account per ip per day. I'm one of god knows how many users behind a gateway, so we all share an ip. Imagine trying to roll out Wengo as a communication platform here? One account per day...]

Why there is no update to portage? I think newer snapshot than 20060106 will be better.

I am on amd64 and 20060106 crashed after a few seconds. But I follwed soviet/funks advice and extracted the debian package and now everthing seems to be stable. I hope the ebuild will be updated soon.
