Well i installed gentoo 1.1a i686 iso with no problem.now i am trying to update portage and rsync.but first i try to emerge wvdial using emerge -k ,emerge --usepkg but it always try to connect to the net and download dependencies.can anybody tell me which are the deps for wvdial and some simple words to upgrade portage and rsync?
also i want to know about ebuilds.what they stand for?i mean if i want to install xfree4.20 i must have the 4.20 src?

For emergeing wvdial use . All the necessary dependancies will be printed on the screen. Then use the above line again but without the -p option.
For learning about ebuilds check here http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/portage-manual.xml _________________ Postcount ++ |

The -p flag is shorthand for --pretend, which lists the packages that would be installed if you didn't have the flag there. |

Of course. Download the package (+dependancies. To check what paqckages are needed do emerge -p (package name)) from somewhere else, ie, a friend who has a dsl/cable connection. Burn to CD. Then on your own computer, copy the files that you burnt to CD to your /usr/portage/distfiles. Then run emerge again. _________________ Postcount ++ |

i am trying to emerge xfree but it seems that i didnt download all the tarballs and it tries to connect to the net.and wvdial is working ok but it seems that a problem with ppp needs to be solved.wvdial detects carrier but after sending username and password the modem hangs.i dont know what to do |

Well, I'm not entirely sure if this is what you are looking for, but there are some great HOWTO's over at the LDP.
Try The PPP HOWTO and let us know how it goes.
