After doing an "emerge --update" yesterday I rebooted my SPARC this morning. Now when it starts it complains with an error message.
"stty: standard input: unable to perform all requested operations"
This message repeats during start-up with the earliest incident occuring immediately after "Added Swap"
It repeats after every daemon run too.
If I try to login in as root I get "configuration error - unknown item PASS_MIN_LEN"
Cheers.

Got any idea which packages that upgraded between the last successful boot and now? I got the same problem. |

I'm trying to work out how to pull of the end of /var/log/emerge.log Hopefully this is ok...
I did the update on the 26th Aug...
athena log # grep "1125" emerge.log > emergAug26.log
athena log # grep "of 17)" emerge26Aug.log | grep emerge | grep completed
It has to be something fairly fundamental to kick in so early in the boot-up process. Which rules out X or anything graphical. I'm running 2.4.31-sparc which has been on the box for a while.
I've highlighted two possible problems. I guess that I'll have to try a roll each of them back to an earlier version to see what happens.

I'm not sure whether or not this helps?

I downgraded baselayout to 1.11.13-r1, which was the latest stable lower than 1.12. Problem went away. Will investigate and probably file a bug report. |

I've also rolled back to the earlier version of baselayout and the "stty" error messages have vanished.
I still get configuration error - unknown item 'PASS_MIN_LEN' (notify administrator) when I try to login to the console.
Below is a list of files that were replaced by the package.
etc/conf.d/._cfg0000_rc
/etc/conf.d/._cfg0000_wireless.example
/etc/conf.d/._cfg0000_local.start
/etc/conf.d/._cfg0000_net.example
/etc/init.d/._cfg0000_clock
/etc/init.d/._cfg0000_bootmisc
/etc/init.d/._cfg0000_halt.sh
/etc/init.d/._cfg0000_keymaps
/etc/init.d/._cfg0000_modules
/etc/init.d/._cfg0000_net.lo
/etc/._cfg0000_services |

That sounds like an error in /etc/login.defs, which belongs to sys-apps/pam-login. Perhaps you shuld try remerging that package and running dispatch-conf again? |

I've re emerged pam-login. I'll have to wait until tomorrow until I can try to log in the actual box. Logging in using ssh hasn't been a problem. |

Re-emerging pam-login didn't fix the problem so I rolled it back from pam-login-4.0.12 to pam-login-3.17.
This fixed the message I guess that's why one version is "stable" and the other "testing"
Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions. |
