gdm problem

When i start gdm in 2005.1 i get this:
gdm_config_parse: Authdir /var/gdm does not exist. Aborting.
Someone told that to repair this must change chmod of /.
Can you tell me what are the normal permissions (this chmod) of the /.

/ should be mod 775, owner=root (0), gid=root (also 0, as I recall).

Skeptical that this would fix the problem.

What version of GDM are you using, and how did you emerge it? Is this the 2005.1 CVS version? Why?
