sound outputting to wrong speakers in 5.1

hi, i changed to gcc 3.4 and upgraded my kernel to 2.6.11-cko and when i try to play something in true 5.1 the sound is mapped to the wrong speakers. i've tried switching the speaker cables fo a quick fix but i can't get any of the combinations to work. here's what's happening when i do "speaker-test -Dplug:surround51 -c6"

the front speakers are fine
the sound that should come out of the center does not come out of any of the speakers
sound that should be coming out of the rear right speaker comes out of the center
sound that should be coming out of the rear left speaker comes out of the subwoofer
sound that should be coming out of the sub does not come out of any of the speakers

i've tried switching my center/LFE jack with the rear jack, etc, but no combination would give me the correct output

it seems like it would be some kind of config problem with ALSA, i don't have an asoundrc in home or in /etc, any ideas?

my sound card is intel8x0, i had alsa compiled into the kernel but last night i removed alsa from the kernel and emerged alsa-drivers, but the problem still remains
