Sound not working in Xwindows

Whenever I try to play a sound through Xwindows with aplay, I get the error

pcm_write:999: write error: Input/Output error

The sound is up, unmuted, and the permissions are set right. The card is
an SBLive! Value, and is using I/O addresses of...

This problem is also there when I log in as root. Sound can be played outside of Xwindows, however. I can aplay a sound outside of xwindows, and it'll play, then login to Xwindows, and it won't. Then I can kill Xwindows, and the sound will work again. Not with just aplay, but mpg123 and any other sound player that I use.

Is there a way to enable the I/O address, so I can have sound? There are no interrupt or I/O address conflicts that I can see.

maybe a problem with /etc/security/console.perms, set the rights correctly in this file, and try to log first as non-root user when you have the console login after boot !
