i followed the guide from :
http://dev.gentoo.org/~spock/projects/gensplash/archive/gensplash-in-5-easy-steps.txt
framebuffer works fine on 1280x1024 but i can't get the splash to start.
splash runs on default runlevel.

my grub.conf:
Code:

initrd /fbsplash-livecd-2005.0-1280x1024

relevant dmesg output:

What do you mean exactly by the splash won't start? I assume that it's not showing up in the console, but if you run "/etc/init.d/splash start" (or restart perhaps) does it say [ok] or error out?

It appears from the dmesg output that splash is starting up correctly though.

(Will update this in a bit when I can check my desktop computer...)

Code:
# /etc/init.d/splash restart
* Setting framebuffer console images ...                                 [ ok ]

it does seem that splash starts correctly, but it doesn't show up :cry:

Okay... how about trying to create the initramfs file again by re-running splash_geninitramfs with the appropriate settings. Perhaps there was a typo the first time, or some important message that got overlooked? Double-check the output after running that to see if there is anything suspicious. Also, do you have the initramfs compiled into the kernel or loading dynamically?

my initramfs is loading dynamically. here's how i generated it:
Code:
# splash_geninitramfs -v -g /boot/fbsplash-livecd-2005.0-1280x1024 -r 1280x1024 livecd-2005.0
o Creating directory structure..
o Copying /sbin/splash_helper..
o Copying themes..
  - livecd-2005.0
o Creating initramfs image..

I also made sure that /boot is mounted and that the image is there :wink:
it seems like everything runs smoothly, only it doesn't work..
what am I missing out here?

Alright, this is strange... everything looks as if it should be working. Kernel all looks good, except perhaps a couple of things that look new to kernel 2.6.12. Double check the use of these settings (particularly the IMAGEBLIT one) and see if they are necessary or what not:

Code:
CONFIG_FB_CFB_FILLRECT=y
CONFIG_FB_CFB_COPYAREA=y
CONFIG_FB_CFB_IMAGEBLIT=y
CONFIG_FB_SOFT_CURSOR=y

Also, do you have a 2.6.11 kernel around, or perhaps build one that you can load up and see if its a kernel problem? One more thing, are you using the gentoo-sources or another flavor of kernel?

I have similar problem with 2.6.12-r1 gentoo-sources.

I have the initramfs compiled into the kernel.
Upon bootup, tty1 is displayed with normal bootup text. After /etc/init.d/splash is run, the console background is set correctly(as in verbose mode). The problem is, I have to manually switch the tty to see the 'silent' splash. After the text starts to appear and the init scripts are being ran, I can push alt-f2 and then the silent splash is shown, and the rest of the boot happens as normal.

I have the fadein option enabled but that doesn't seem to be working either.....Doesn't seem to be a problem with the initramfs because the splash is working, it's just not brought to the foreground. Perhaps this is the same problem being seen with the thread originator?

(Also, setting video mode with vesafb does not seem to work. I have to use the vga option...Don't know if this is important or not.)

Here is my menu.lst
Code:

kernel /usr/src/linux/arch/x86_64/boot/bzImage root=/dev/hda2 quiet vga=0x31B CONSOLE=/dev/tty1 splash=silent,fadein,theme:livecd-2005.0

Here's my .config
Code:

CONFIG_FB_CFB_FILLRECT=y
CONFIG_FB_CFB_COPYAREA=y
CONFIG_FB_CFB_IMAGEBLIT=y
CONFIG_FB_SOFT_CURSOR=y
# CONFIG_FB_MACMODES is not set

I did try to revert to gentoo-sources-2.6.11-r11. Things went a little worse, things started the same at boot, but never set the 'verbose' type background after booting.....I didn't mess with it to try to get it working, but did an emerge prune, without paying attention, and it unmerged my 2.6.12-r1....so I wound up remerging gentoo-sources-2.6.12-r1, redid my initramfs, and strangely, it now works.....Not sure why? but for some reason the 'fadein' is still not working. I get the 'init' message, a few of the initscripts run, and when it gets to 'enabling swap' then it goes into the 'quiet' splash mode.....This is still different, in the past, on boot, it would fade in from the begining, without any text being shown....things are not working as they did, but they're 'working-ish'...not really sure where to go from here??

hey Big Jim Slade, when I ran make menuconfig I couldn't find those options so I disabled them manually. It didn't help with gentoo-sources-2.6.12-r2 but I did follow your advice and emerged gentoo-sources-2.6.11-r11 and gensplash worked, so I wonder how I should change my .config to make it work with 2.6.12

When you're in the menuconfig there, you can try searching for those options by pressing the / key... that is, slash... it'll bring up a search box where you can type in the particular string you're looking for such as FILLRECT. Sometimes they don't quite match up though, so you might have to fiddle with it to find exactly what you are looking for, but you should be able to find them this way and figure out what they do.

According to picklestix information though, this doesn't seem to be entirely a kernel issue... what kind of video cards are ya'll running anyway?

This is a really strange problem, as I've gotten the splash running without incident (verbose, haven't tried silent) on three computers including an intel 855 card which is notoriously fussy about the framebuffer.

I have an nvidia geforce4, 440 go, with 64m ram. I'm using 1280x1024 res, and have a compaq r3000 laptop, with gentoo ~amd64...

Verbose splash does work fine for me, it's the fade-in and longer than usual delay to see the silent screen that are strange to me......Big Jim, are you running 64 bit? If so maybe you could try to switch into silent,fadein mode and see what happens. (Whats even stranger is that at one point in time I had it working fully with some forgotten flavor of 2.6.11.....but i've recompiled and tried the initrd method as well as compiling into the kernel and redone everything 20 times and can't seem to get it back.....)

I'll give it a go... I know I did silent once and it worked fine but I didn't really enjoy it, so I switched back to verbose... I'll get back shortly

Okay... I've set it to silent and to silent/fadein, and silent seems to work fine but fadein doesn't appear to do anything--looks the same as silent. Silent does appear to work fine with the progressbar and everything, so there's that. I've currently got the bootsplash set for dynamic load, so I'm going to play with compiling it in the kernel and see what happens there. I'll edit this post here with the results...

.. oh, one more things, just so I know I did this right, all I should have to do to enable fadein is change my splash=verbose line to splash=silent,fadein right?

UPDATE:

Compiling into the kernel appears to have made no difference at all... operates just the same in or out of the kernel as far as I can tell. I did notice however that dmesg reports the following using the "fadein" option:
Code:
fbsplash: unrecognized option fadein

So, either there is no fadein or the syntax is wrong... going to try to dig around some.

I've managed to get the splash to appear after altering the kernel syntax which is now:
Code:
Kernel command line: root=/dev/sda3 vga=0x31B noexec=on noexec32=on video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr splash=verbose,fadein,theme:emergence CONSOLE=/dev/vc/1

I've checked my dmesg but I don't have anything reporting fadein as an invalid option but I don't see any fadein either.. not sure whether it's because am/we using vesafb driver instead of vesa-tng. Also for some reason there isn't a splash on the kernel messages screen (using syslog-ng - Ctrl Alt F12) when there use to be in the older splashutils.

I have a Gibabyte 6600GT card. I tried looking for those options in menuconfig and they are all selected by FB so I guess I can't really disable them :(
Code:
 Selected by: FB_CIRRUS && FB && (ZORRO || PCI)
I really think this is entirely a kernel problem since it works perfectly with gentoo-sources-2.6.11-r11

I tend to agree that this looks like a kernel issue with 2.6.12, but it still seems kind of sketchy... picklestix still seemed to have problems with the 2.6.11 kernel. If it's prodedurely reproducable perhaps a bug report is in order? What might be the steps to reproduce it and is it only a 64-bit issue (I tend not to think so, but who knows)?

I will try again with an older revision of 2.6.11 and see what happens with that......

I reverted to 2.6.11 again, with the same result as the last 2.6.11 trip - not worth discussing the details here except to note that it didn't work for me.....

Now i'm back on 2.6.12-r3 and still no change...I switched to verbose splash and things are fine...What's really frustrating is that I had fadein working just before the 2.6.12 kernel was put into ~amd64....once I upgraded I can't get it back.....even going back to the same kernel I was using before the upgrade.....

I've got my splash working on gentoo 64, but I'm having the same delay issue. I've added splash to the boot, but I'm not getting it from the initrd. I see it as soon as the init.d script runs (which obviously as rather late in the boot process).

I'm not in front of my box, so I can't remember what I'm running, but it's the 64 sources from about 3 weeks ago. Anyway, on my athlon xp running 2.6.8, were there more options for initrd?? Something that actually loaded the ramdisk at the beginning of the boot process that I'm missing now?

I'd like to add my dealings with splashutils in the hope that I can be of some assistance also.

I run a 32-bit install side by side my 64-bit install, kernel 2.6.11r9 and kernel 2.6.11r11 respectively. (though I am in the process of downloading 2.6.12r4)

i have had a lot of success with splashutils, no hitch at all.

Code:

root (hd0,0)
kernel /kernel-2.6.11r11-Sonic_64b /root=/dev/hda5 vga=0x318 video=vesafb:mtrr,ywrap,1024x768-32@60 splash=silent,fadin,theme:spirals quiet CONSOLE=/dev/tty1
initrd (hd0,0)/fbsplash-spirals-1024x768

I have noticed some rather weird behaviour though when /etc/splash/default is not symlinked to the splash screen you're using. It had a habit of switching to the silent screen of the default on startup and shutdown, after switching from the initrd to the version on the hard disk (I think that's when it is...)

I think this was with using splashutils-0.9.1 under 64-bit, but again, I've just upgraded. Once I've rebooted, I will hopefully be able to tell you if it's working under splashutils-1.1.9.7

There was brief discussion about the 'fadein' option. I can say that I have not noticed a fadein under vesa-tng nor vesafb, but I've never noticed a complaint either. To be honest though, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a palette animation (which would require 8-bit colour). I hardly think it's a critical option.

I have had gensplash running perfectly on my machine ever since I followed the guide on...

http://www.gentoo.org/news/en/gwn/20050418-newsletter.xml

... I even have it running on the new and improved 2.6.12-gentoo-r4 kernel!

Rob.

PS: The 2005.0 theme, with the icon bar on boot looks lovely.

Did you set up the ttys in /etc/conf.d/splash?

I just got my silent working instantly, so I'm pretty happy at the moment :D

yes, but i just realise the following:

if i run "/etc/init.d/splash start" it neither gives [OK] nor [!!] 8O
status says it is started. i also tried zap and stop, then start again. shouldnt it say [OK] 8O

i guess the script fails to start somehow.. hmm..
i also upgraded to udev today, could this have to do with this?
OTOH.. everything else seems to be working fine.

//edit: found the problem - my bad :twisted:
there was a new /etc/init.d/splash - i didnt realize this. it works now :P

I upgraded splashutils to splashutils-1.1.9.7 and now gensplash finally shows up (on all tty's), the only problem now is that it shows up really late, at the end of boot process.
