The subject was Where did sound "Emulation for 32-bit applications" but I changed it since it's more of a (yet another) Doom3-demo no sound post..

I'm on amd64 and I don't have any "Emulation for 32-bit applications" option in the sound part of my kernel config. Why not? (I'm not getting sound in Doom3-demo, and I've read I need the emulation option).

I'm using gentoo-sources-2.6.12-r7. AMD64 3200+ Nvidia 6600GT PCIe on NF4-SLI (A8N-SLI Ultra)
All app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-* ebuilds are installed, excepte app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-nvidia.
I'm using the kernel ALSA drivers (snd-intel8x0), compiled as modules:
Code:
<M> Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
<M>   Sequencer support
< >     Sequencer dummy client
<M>   OSS Mixer API
<M>   OSS PCM (digital audio) API
[ ]   OSS Sequencer API
<M>   RTC Timer support
...
PCI Devices -->
<M> Intel/SiS/nVidia/AMD/ALi AC97 Controller

Code:
# cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.9rc2  (Thu Mar 24 10:33:39 2005 UTC).

# cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [CK804          ]: NFORCE - NVidia CK804
                     NVidia CK804 with ALC850 at 0xd2003000, irq 217

Code:
# emerge info
Portage 2.0.51.22-r2 (default-linux/amd64/2005.0, gcc-3.4.4, glibc-2.3.5-r1, 2.6.12-gentoo-r7-ct8 x86_64)

The 32-bit compatibility feature no longer depends on that option; it is automatically turned on by default.

Thus, your sound troubles lie elsewhere. Do you get sound in anything via ALSA? Via OSS? Do you get sound in the Doom 3 demo if you set the sound backend to ALSA? OSS?

Ok. Thats just less trouble for 32-bit emulation on 64-bit :D

I get sound just fine with xmms. From local mp3 files and from streaming ogg radio channel.

Update:The error I get in Doom3-demo is:
Code:
------ Alsa Sound Initialization -----
dlopen(libasound.so.2)
asoundlib version: 1.0.8
ALSA lib pcm.c:6449:(snd_pcm_slave_conf) unknown format S16
snd_pcm_open SND_PCM_STREAM_PLAYBACK 'default' failed: Invalid argument
dlclose
WARNING: sound subsystem disabled

Fixed :)Edited my DoomConfig and changed to:
Code:
seta s_driver "oss"
Solution found here: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-2618937.html

(perhaps this thread should be moved to "Gamers & Players" forum...??)
