A bit of advice for anyone considering adding a router or print server. I struggled with adding a Brother HL-1250 to my D-link DI-824VUP router / print server. I followed all of the advice in this formum and the CUPS forum, but one bit of information was missing- YOU NEED TO USE THE PARALLEL PRINTER PORT, NOT THE USB PORT.
Thus-
Login to CUPS, add printer, add URI as lpd://192.168.0.1/lp, enter model no. etc,
Enusure printer is connected to PARALLEL PORT on router and printer.
Voila- Success!
Hope this helps anyone else.
Alan.

Yeah cups works allot essier with PARALLEL than USB. I have a CC box as my router/firewall running cups server as well. I had no issues installing a Tally-9114 laser printer and even my windows clients can all print as well. It's kind of neat this way I only need 1 pc running 24/7 instead of having to fire up my pc so that somebody else can print.
I have gentoo installed in 1 laptop and I'm installing gentoo on my old P2 233 and only using it in text mode.
This is why I love gentoo you can use all your old hardware to do all kinds of neat stuff. I never throw out my pc's I just recycle them and give them new jobs under linux.
haha try doing that with windows..... |

Hi!
I know this is an old thread but I found it very usefull yesterday when I was about to configure my new Brother HL 2030 printer.
I use it toghether with the new D-Link router DI-524UP which has a use printer port. There was no problem to get the printer up and running using CUPS with the USB connection.
I followd the printing guide found here: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/printing-howto.xml, when I was to add the printer in CUPS, a gave it the adress lpd://192.168.0.1/lp1 and voila it worked.
Actually, it took more thought to get it working on my notebook (running windows xp) than on gentoo =)
I hope that this helps others
