I have been reading several posts in this forum about setting up connection sharing, but quite frankly, it's pretty much all over my head. I have a Gentoo box with two NICs. I want eth1 to be connected to my laptop via a crossover cable. I can't modprobe iptables_nat Where in the kernel config can I add this? I also need to modify /etc/init.d/net for eth1, but I don't know what to do for that. Also, should I just run the Gentoo box as a DHCP server? Is this what most people do in a situation like mine? I can't find the Daniel Robbins article on Stateful Firewalls. Also, what will I need to change on the laptop because it will be going through the gentoo box to get its internet connection. Thanks.

In kernel menuconfig, enable the "Network Packet Filtering" option in the networking section. Then go to the Netfilter Configuration option in the same section.

Here you must enable Connection Tracking, IP Tables support, Full NAT, and MASQUERADE target support, in order to share the net connection. To have stateful firewalling, you need to enable connection state match support, and packet filtering, and also REJECT target support if you want to return reset in your firewall rules.

There are several HOWTO's available at the netfilter homepage http://www.netfilter.org/.

Hope this is helpful.

Okay thanks

Now I need to change some things in /etc/conf.d/net

I think all I need to be concerned with is the ifconfig section and the dhcp section. I want eth1 to act as a dhcp server for the windows box, but I'm not sure what to put in /etc/conf.d/net and where to put it in that file. I'm wanting to do the same setup as in this post

Thanks again
