|
|
Do you know any rock stable, excellent, fast SATA RAID controller (hardware, most likely PCI-X)? I was trying to Google and every test is done under Windoze ... I am interested in personal experience under Gentoo Linux. It is supposed to run on a server, so I need something fast and stable.
Thx _________________ Registered Linux user number 369644

Depends on the SATA RAID controller.
Some, such as many of Promise's controllers are software RAID, and use closed-source drivers. They are a total pain to install and get working, and they offer next to no support.
Some others are much better, and have full kernel support built right in. They tend to work like a charm
So what controller you got? |

What is the server to be used for? Depending on the application you may want to consider software raid. Choose your best tool for the job right?
I have a number of servers deployed using software raid at the moment. I'm also buying a bunch more next month, so I'm researching what to go with. At the moment it's going to be a mixed solution, software for some, hardware for others, but I may change my mind.... I'm trying to accumulate more data to make a decision if your interested: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-2590877.html |

Well, I know one thing:
Don't buy a Promise or LSI controller and expect it to support full RAID in Linux
