Hi I am trying to play videos downloaded from http://www.go-opensource.org/go_open/news/download_go_open/ which are .mp4 files.
Mplayer will not play the file at all:

Please let me know if you have been able to play this video.

hmm... you would think that this being a series about open source they would use a suitable codec. |

I am having some problems with the Go Open videos as well. They seem to play, but there is no sound and all I get is a kind of static pattern.
I just tried cuciferus' advice,
Quote: |
USE=acc emerge mplayer
|
and there was no acc option for mplayer. Is this normal?
Instead I tried
Code: |
USE="divx4linux" emerge mplayer
|
I'll post whether this worked or not when I can test it out. _________________ 2B or !(2B) |

It's not acc, but aac.

Doesn't really matter. As far as I can see, none of them exist as a use flag for mplayer.
Edit: Although, looking at gentoo-portage.com, it seems that there is an 'aac' use flag for mplayer since 1.0_pre6-r6, which is currently masked. |

I cannot play the .wav files that faad gives me either. Try reencoding them with oggenc they work fine for me after I do that.
It looks like mplayer dislikes aac. When I try to play aac files in mplayer the left channel is muted and I only get sound on the right channel. |

I have now finnished downloading the Go Open files. When I tried playing with the command:
Code: |

And the final line repeated indefinitely like a broken loop.
It does seem funny that a program about switching to open source software should be so hard to get to play!
By the way, my mplayer version is MPlayer 1.0pre6-3.3.2 if this helps anyone debug my problem.
I'm just going now to emerge the ~x86 version of mplayer, which for me at the moment is mplayer-1.0_pre7. Thanks to rafael I have just discovered that this version DOES have an aac USE option. I'll see if this fixes the problem, and post my results. _________________ 2B or !(2B) |

It worked!
I simply emerged mplayer-1.0_pre7 with the aac (and divx4linux and theora) USE flags, and now mplayer can play the Go Open episodes.
Thank you all for your help, yet again it is proven that these Gentoo Forums are the repository of all known information in the cosmos! _________________ 2B or !(2B) |

I can play the Go Open videos with Mplayer, but the audio and video are out of sync and get worse further into the video. Anyone have any suggestions for fixing this? _________________ Keith Kastorff |

SchrodingerPenguin: Thanks for reporting back, and it's good to see that it works with a newer version of mplayer.

Mplayer has the wonderful capability of being able to adjust the audio sync -- LIVE!
Check the man page, but I think it is the "+" and "-" keys which do the trick.
The great thing about this, of course, is that even a file in which the audio looses sync half way through can be successfully viewed. _________________ 2B or !(2B) |
