Well don't. Get rid of that, but you may want alsa-utils. You should have all of the alsa packages except from one or two, can't remember which ones. But, if you get rid of all the alsa packages, then emerge alsa-utils, that will get all of the mixer utils, but skip out alsa itself. That's what I did, working fine here.

only thing to emerge -C is the "media-sound/alsa-driver", other alsa stuff should be updated (if not already up2date) to 1.0.9b (headers and libs in any case),

So no, I don't think you have to unmerge any of your alsa stuff. You have to update it tho.
Try Tiger's advice above, perhaps read the beginning of this thread and see if the advice already given about ALSA works for you. Also make sure (just check, will ya) if the correct sound drivers are compiled.

Thanks for pointing out what Tiger683 originally said. Sorry I missed it. I'll triple-check the kernel sound drivers and figure out how to get up to alsa 1.0.9b. I don't seem to have it available for ~amd64, so I'll try explicitly emerging that version.

Cheers,
Steve

I had to put it in package.keywords with the ~x86 keyword (since 1.09b is not released as stable yet). In your case, I'm not sure if that would help or not... Perhaps see if it's hardmasked...

ndiswrapper (CVS) is not working with this ... what changed from nitro3 that causes "incompatible type for argument 2 of `pci_set_power_state'?

Looking at the ndiswrapper code, it uses PMSG_ON as that argument... drivers/pci/pci.c somewhat says that it supports PCI_D0, PCI_D1, PCI_D2, PCI_D3hot, PCI_D3cold... investigating
[edit]
Heh, changed it from PMSG_ON to PCI_D0 and now we get the good old error
Code:
driver/ntoskernel.c:1765:61: macro "kthread_run" requires 5 arguments, but only 3 given
driver/ntoskernel.c: In function `PsCreateSystemThread':
driver/ntoskernel.c:1765: error: `kthread_run' undeclared (first use in this function)
driver/ntoskernel.c:1765: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
driver/ntoskernel.c:1765: error: for each function it appears in.)

And then, after adding NULL, NULL to the argument list of that call...
it says it was passed 5 but only takes 3 :|

sorry this is a bit off topic, but seems like CK has released http://members.optusnet.com.au/ckolivas/interbench/ --> has anyone tried it yet and compared ck-based patchsets (like nitro) to vanilla 2.6? Would be interesting to see some statistics.
I did a bunch of tests with different recent patchsets (ck-based) and a vanilla kernel. I won't bother putting the results here, but the tests indicated three interesting points.

1. Differences between ck and vanilla kernels were fuzzy at best
Con K. wrote:
...I have to admit you need to squint hard to be convinced that -ck is better overall. Both mainline and -ck perform better in different load settings (source)

Though latency of "X" was generally lower with ck-patches, latencies were higher for "Burn" and "Compile".

2. Genetic anticipatory io-scheduler introduces higher read/write latencies that cfq
Yes, on all three ck-based patchsets that I tried, cfq had lower latencies in io than genetic anticipatory.

3. Staircase scheduler tunables decreases latency more than just ck-patches
Though there's obviously performance costs, and stability risks as well, test results were significantly better for lower values for the tunables. Personally, it seems that if you don't mind sacrificing performance (a.k.a. "speed") for interactivity, finding lower-but-still-stable values for the tunables is not a bad idea.

I've been running nitro5 for about 24 hours now, and I haven't had any stability issues yet. As for the test results, it just goes to show how fuzzy the concept of "interactivity" (and responsiveness) can be, and how difficult it is to measure and compare.

There's a definite (and obvious to most) trade-off between performance, interactivity/responsiveness, and stability. At least one of these has to be sacrificed to improve the others.

ok, here we go:
Tiger683 wrote:

The issue you describe in your blog is the one with kthread*whatever, which is an even more cruel beast...most calls use an elypsis, and thus fake to have even one more argument than required (...) :-P

[SMARTGUYMODE]

the MACRO kthread_run is defined as:
Code:

#define kthread_run(threadfn, data, freezer_flags, namefmt, ...)      \
//do_whatever

so, we have the freezer flags on position 3, which is being added by SWSUSP2...
I'm too lazy to look into swsusp2 patch now, so the thing is to set it to "do nothing"(here: 0).
The macro needs 4 args, and further are optional.
Furthermore, adding NULL at the end is wrong, as then you pass the namefmt string as an int value freezer_flags, and namefmt is NULL (omg! death....)

so, change the call

Code:

kthread_run(X, Y, Z)

to

Code:

kthread_run(X, Y, 0, Z)

NOT NULL, the argument is int(here: 0), this way you get one less compiler warning

[/SMARTGUYMODE]

baeksu: thx, i was getting similar results right before release, but only compared to con's results from the announcement......
.Now we can be sure, that everyone needs to test what is better for their average allday load......

Thanks tiger, but I did figure it out myself, and fixed a couple more compile errors, until it finally worked :P

Works now :)

Is it possible to use something like
#if CONFIG_SUSPEND2
<code>
#else
<code>
#endif

in ndiswrapper code? I'm pretty sure its possible but I dont know if CONFIG_SUSPEND2 is right...

I might as well mention too that I also don't have suspend2 enabled... so suspend2 isn't really completely 100% disabled in-code by deselecting then, is it?

Running great on x86_64 with nvidia and reiser4 :)

Thanks for all the hard work!

(oh, and the system is faster with the basetime scheduler--if that is the right name, heh :)

Anyone have had any trouble with Bootsplash with this kernel? I don't seem able to successfully specify a splash (splash -s -f /path/to/theme.cfg >> initrd-<your_kernel>.img). Without the splash, the kernel boots just fine, but if I specify one, I get a kernel panic and VFS error regarding the ramdisk at sector 0,0.

hi,

just wanted to know if anyone are having problems using usb thumbdrive on this kernel. it freezes my pc after pulling out my usb thing. i think genetic-lib is the culprit as after i have recompiled this kernel without genetic-lib it doesn't freeze anymore.

great release, tiger thanks.

Hmm nope... my thumbdrive(s) work just fine with this kernel. I have genetic sched configured too..., maybe something does make it to syslog?

I just can't get the bootsplash to work, period (then again, I don't use a ramdisk so I can't tell if I'd have kernel panick). USB sticks work fine here as well. Ever since I changed to 2.6.12 Firefox has been randomly crashing closed, but I'm not ready to point the finger at the kernel yet. Works fast tho ;)

Could ati-drivers-8.4.13-r1 work with nitro-sources-2.6.12-r5 & gcc 4.0.1 ? I can't use the 2.6.12 patches & gcc 4.x patches together :cry:

Anyone using gcc4 with this kernel is not being officially supported.... get yourself a not-broken compiler.

vesafb-tng + fbsplash working with no problems both in silent and verbose mode.

the patch from love-sources for the early problems with it is already included, i can pull my usb-stick (1G OTi flash) whenever i wish, no problems, also not on genetic-as.

And people, please, be a little more verbose with your bugreports (but longer logfiles and .configs hosted somewhere else with only a link are highly appreciated)...
NITRO5-ANNOUNCEMENT wrote:

Legoguy:

Heh, now you know why i am one of the biggest swsusp2 haters....... ;)
the correct way to do this would be:

add
Code:

#include <linux/config.h>

somewhere between the incude lines on top

and then use

Code:

#ifdef CONFIG_SUSPEND2
<code>
#else
<alternative code>
#endif

the #else and <alternative code> are only optional, if you want branching at compiletime (preprocessor) that is.... ;)

for code to only be present if it is NOT selected use accordingly:
Code:

#ifndef CONFIG_SUSPEND2
<do me if no SWS2 selected>
#endif

I found a patch that "supposedly" works for gcc4 and 2.6.12, but it wouldn't patch succesfuly.

Stop leeching pr0n stuff. =)
Hehe, just jokin'. I'm running Reiser4 as FS too and for me it's quiet fast as normal and even with a lot of stuff my disk.
Btw: Can you use more full stops please? Reading posts is easier than. :)

using X, can't see anything on syslog, but on tty12 yes, and yes it is genetic-as causing problems at least for me. but no sweat i'm not using genetic-as anyway, cfq works well for me. maybe something on my system is causing the oops. thanks anyway.

Hmm. I have no problems with genetic-as and my usb harddisks/thumbrives. even when transfering files ;)

maybe helpful if you post the last 5 messages of your syslog, then maybe it is easyer to reconstruct when the kernel is locking.

I'm trying to get my intel 2200bg card to work. I thought I'd post here since nitro is an "unsupported" kernel. :roll: I first tried a 2.6.13 mm kernel, but then learned that the ipw2200 didn't compile under a 2.6.13 kernel. So I tried this nitro since it says it has ipw2200 included. I have already emerged wireless-tools and ipw2200-firmware, but did not emerge ipw2200.
Here's what I get at boot:
Code:
ipw2200: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200/2915 Network Driver, 1.0.4
ipw2200: Copyright(c) 2003-2004 Intel Corporation
...
ipw2200: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
ipw2200: ipw-2.3-boot.fw load failed: Reason -2
ipw2200: Unable to load firmware: 0xFFFFFFFE
ipw2200: failed to register network device
ipw2200: probe of 0000:02:05.0 failed with error -5

Why can't it load the firmware?

Just curious to see if any fellow pvr-250/350 users out there could get ivtv to load all the modules needed.

Also, I've been experiencing system pauses during heavy I/O (ie. rm -rf of a directory with several large [500mb+] files, also sometimes with multiple smaller files [10mb+]). During the pauses, load averages spike to 8.0+. I'm currently using 2.6.12-rc2-nitro1 SMP PREEMPT, and I figured with the new release I might give it a try to see if it aids in my issues. Any ideas what could be causing the system hangups? I havent noticed it under the 2.6.5-dev-sources kernel I have, so I figure it could be a setting that got botched.
