Hi all,
I know I saw this somewhere before I installed my framebuffer, but now I cant find the solution after a few days of searching!
I am using the setup described in the fbsplash HOWTO in the gentoo wiki (http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_fbsplash#Emerging_splashutils)
I have my kernel compiled with vesafb support and have a cheap nvidia vanta card. here is my grub paramater list:
root=/dev/ram0 real_root=/dev/hda4 init=/linuxrc ramdisk_size=8192 video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1280x1024-32@72 splash=verbose,theme:emergence udev
i am obviously using genkernel and passed it the paramater to compile the fb into the initrd, and it is loaded via grub as well.
the fb works fine after boot up and exists on all consoles. When i start X, X functions perfectly as well
however, when i try to ctrl+alt f1-6 back to a console, the screen becomes pixelated and garbled and the system doesnt seem to respond to any input (type reboot, ctrl+c X, switch back to X, etc).
what did i do wrong? again, i know the answer exists on here somwhere, but i cant find it for the life of me. maybe this thread will help others searching for the same issue.
thx! |

I use Qingy, so disabling FB is not an option. Just posting here to be informed when it's solved. Meanwhile, can anyone give me a bugzilla link to stalk like a madman? _________________ .i lu doi ringos.star. xu do puku'aroroi dunli dopecaku leni virnu li'u

Something very very weird just happened.
I've been having problems with my cdr, so I decided to re-compile the kernel (2.6.12-r6) with ide-scsi emulation support. I did it (into the kenrel, nor as a module), then I added something like hdc=ide-scsi in the" kernel" line in the file grub.conf
Then, strangely, this fixed my framebuffer problem mentioned here!!
I don't know whether it was the new kernel or the parameters added in grub.conf.
My cdr is still not working (seems to be broken) but now vesafb and Xwindow work flawlessly!!! I can switch from X to fbconsole and back again!! fbspalsh looks great!!
Well, that's it.
Hope it works for you too. _________________ AMD Athlon 64 2800+

Driven to your voodoo out of despair, I've tried enabling "ide-scsi" and telling kernel my hdc is one of such, but (surprise!) switching from an x session to a virtual console still doesn't work any better. Could you remember if you did anything else while in the kernel? I already tried
If anyone has any idea what is causing this and how to fix it, I'd be grateful. I'm using the latest kernel revision (2.6.12-r9), xorg-x11 6.8.2-r2, directfb 0.9.22, ati-drivers 8.14.13-r2
So far, I've heard rumors that this happens only to LCD displays, then revised to say it happens only to DVI-connected displays. In my case, it happens on a laptop, but not on my desktop. _________________ .i lu doi ringos.star. xu do puku'aroroi dunli dopecaku leni virnu li'u

Lies! It's happening on my CRT with the latest stable amd64 xorg, ~amd64 nvidia drivers and 2.6.12-r6.
Someone help us! |

I just came across a similar problem with kernel 2.6.13, a framebuffer console and ati-drivers 8.14.13-r4. When I switched from X to a console, my system would lock up (no keyboard response and no login through the network). This also affected the system shutdown when x exits, you are generally switched back to the console and the system would lockup.
Anyway, in Device Drivers -> Graphics support I disabled "Ati Radeon display support" and I'm now just using the regular vesafb-tng as a framebuffer. That fixed my lockup problem. If you experience similar crashes when switching from X to a console, try different framebuffer settings in your kernel. I worked for me.
hope this helps someone. |
