I turned my monitor on this morning to find a blank screen on my U5. I'd recently put another HD into the case, and it looked to me like it may have overheated somewhat during a heatwave here in the UK. When i rebooted the machine, gentoo got half way through booting when it experienced a kernel panic at an unusual place. Since then any attempt to boot the machine has resulted in the system halting during the 'Checking memory /' stage of the U5 boot sequence (nothing to do with gentoo). Is this a memory problem, or CPU? The hard drive i installed (a 200gb, so quite warm) was installed in the space above the disk drive. As many of you will know the disk drive module on a U5 is directly above the RAM. If this is a memory problem it will cost significantly less to fix, so i'd appreciate as many opinions on it as possible. Thanks very much guys,

Try the extended POST with a serial console attached (9600,8,N,1 - diag-switch? true and diag-level max). And you could put the DIMMs in the other bank, or at least swap both DIMMs in your bank. |

I've no idea why, but this morning the machine booted. It's been up now for 2 hours with no problems. Could this still be a bad memory problem, with the machine ready to die at any random moment? I'm somewhat confused,
Cheers,

It could be that something was mis-seated due to heat and a temperature change caused it to become... un-mis-seated. |
