|
|
Hi there,
I'd like to announce yet another attempt to create a proper user interface for managing Portage.
It uses KDE/Qt and focusses on easy handling, a flexible code base and "doing things right".
I just released Pakoo 0.1. It's is a bit like a preview, because it doesn't install, uninstall
or update packages yet. Nevertheless I think that it's good to release it in an early state,
because that way I can pick up your visions, good ideas and other proposals on how you think
a fine package manager should work. Maybe there's even some developer who wants to
help out implementing the functionality.
'nuff said for now - if you're interested in Pakoo, you're invited to visit
http://pakoo.berlios.de
where you can get extensive infos and the downloadable release tarball.
Prepare to remember Pakoo as "the application with the meanest app icon ever"...
I'm eager to listen to your feedback! |

I tried it and it didn't find all the packages. It says "641 packages in the portage tree, 639 installed." It should have found 9550. I'm running the cdb portage module if that makes a difference.
The icon is nice though |

Ah yes, that makes a difference. Pakoo uses the Portage cache in /usr/portage/edb/dep
for fast package loading (I wanted to do it faster than Kuroo) so it doesn't work if the cache
isn't there. Well, it should, there's a hidden configuration option, but it doesn't work currently.
I'll make a better fallback mechanism for the next release.

should not be too difficult, I'll try right now.
Ironically I've never been much into Portage myself, haven't used ebuilds from
outside the tree by now. It seems now is the time to change that... |

Moved from Portage & Programming to Unsupported Software (no pun intended). |

Ok, there's now an ebuild for Pakoo,
you can also find it on the web site's download page. Like all the 3rd party ebuilds, it has to
be digested with
Code: | ebuild /usr/local/portage/app-portage/pakoo/pakoo-0.1.ebuild digest |
(or something like that, depending on the folder that you've put the ebuild into). |

Code: | ebuild /usr/local/portage/app-portage/pakoo/pakoo-0.1.ebuild digest |
doesn't work for me it's complain some about not specifed path. Have you similar problem?
[edited]
for me works:
Code: | ebuild /usr/portage/app-portage/pakoo/pakoo-0.1.ebuild digest |
& then just
emerge pakoo _________________ caruso |

Like I said: depending on the folder that you've put the ebuild into.
Glad that you managed to get it emerging. And thanks for trying out! |

Just curious:
Why the duplication of efforts when Pakoo and Kuroo can join hands and work together? _________________ eschew obfuscation |
