Ok... I've hit EVERY problem a newbie can have; and have found most of the answers in the forums. They are VERY helpful.

I'm hitting the ol'

dhcpcd[1968]: dhcpStart: ioctl SIOCGIFHWADDR: No such device 

Failed to bring eth0 up 

ERROR: Problem starting needed services. 
"netmount" was not started. 

problem. I understand the solution is to compile the correct Driver into the kernel.

However, I cannot find the correct driver for my card in the kernel. It was installed by the Comcast Cable (I have 4 or 5 ethernet cards -- they say I had to use their card -- smoke and mirrors )

It is listed as an

SMC EZ Card PCI 10 Adapter (SMC1208)....

I used the Tulip driver since I had used it for several other cards in Linux instalations (Slackware, Red Hat, Mandrake etc....) for ages.

Which driver should I use..... Then, I can get past this phase and install X and KDE...

(I'm gonna try another driver and make clean and make a new kernel)....

Well, I had said in my previous post
that the problem was the correct driver.

I did a dmesg | eth0 (under the Gentoo boot
disk); and found that I had a

RealTek RTL-8029

Card... This in not what my "Cable guy" had said.
However, a quick search of the menuconfig program
did not find the driver for that card under
the network device option.

BUT, I found the RealTek RTL-8139!!!!
So, I tried compiling it into the
kernel!!!!

NOT!!!!

So, I did some more digging into the
"help" options in the menuconfig program.
I found under PCI NE2000 and clone support that this
driver supported the RealTek RTL-8029.

I rebuilt the kernel and compiled it into the
new build and I'm up and running.
I emerged Lynx into my instance of
Gentoo; and am using this to post the success, before
emerging xfree (I plan to start the
emerge and go to bed -- it's now 12:40 A.M.)

While I did not get a direct response to my previous
post, I appreciate ALL the other posts in these
forums. They are informative, helpful and concerned
about making Gentoo a better product.

I appreciate you post. I got the Gentoo Linux system up and running about a month ago; and the post you refer to is exactly where I had my problem.

After getting the thing up, getting KDE workng and having a "screaming" machine... I'm working at tweaking it. My next Gentoo project is to get the fonts looking better on Gentoo... But now that I've gotten the thing up and running, I'm not in a hurry. I'm primiarlly doing some Java and C++ development, which is why I wanted to build a Linux system anyway...
