Doing my first Gentoo install on a new box, I get the following:

 >> Attempting to mount CD:- /newroot/dev/ide/cd/*
 >> Attempting to mount CD:- /newroot/dev/sr0
 >> Attempting to mount CD:- /newroot/dev/sd*
 >> No bootable medium found. Waiting for new devices...
 >> Attempting to mount CD:- /newroot/dev/cdroms/*
 >> Attempting to mount CD:- /newroot/dev/ide/cd/*
 >> Attempting to mount CD:- /newroot/dev/sr0
 >> Attempting to mount CD:- /newroot/dev/sd*
Could not find CD to boot, something else needed!
mount: Mounting /newroot/dev on /dev failed: No such file or directory
 >> Loading keymaps...
 ...
 >> Keeping default keymap...
mount: Mounting none on /sys failed: Device or resource busy
 >> Activating Device-Mapper raid(s)...
 no block devices found
 >> Determining root device...
 >> The root block device is unspecified or not detected.
Please specify a device to boot, or "shell" for a shell...

From reading other posts, I'm deducing that my optical drive isn't being recognized. I haven't been able to find any specific instructions for getting this drive working on a clean install.

Here are my hardware specifics:
AMD Athlon64 3000+ (Venice)
Foxconn NF4U8KAA motherboard (nForce4 Ultra chipset)
nVidia GeForce 6600GT PCI-Xpress graphics controller
any other info needed?

Thanks,
Eugene

Seems your DVD uses Serial ATA. For the moment, support for ATAPI on SATA in libata is experimental, and not enabled by default (and by "not enabled", I don't mean it is disabled in menuconfig, you need to change one of the include files to enable it, as it is still buggy). In any case, the livecd kernel doesn't have it. I know this does not help you to make it work, but I can't do much more.

Thanks for your reply, widan. I'm trying to exercise some flexibility  and just using a regular IDE drive, and that does work. I guess that's what I get for wanting bleeding-edge hardware.
