I'm having troubles with X hardlocking on a U60 w/a Creator 3D. Simply put, X comsumes 100% of a processor on either (1) logging out of an X session or (2) VT switching. X/video output becomes completely useless. No amount of VT-switching (or cursing for that matter) makes a difference.

The problem occurs anywhere between very frequently (eg, every logout/login or VT-switch) to relativly infrequent (I just made it through three days of uptime and several logouts).

I recently, before this last uptime, modified my xorg.conf to mirror exactly the configs posted by fmccor (http://dev.gentoo.org/~fmccor/docs/xorg/xorg.conf/xorg.conf.html). I thought I had it fixed -- this uptime was the most I've ever seen if I don't avoid logging in and out.

This limitation is frustrating at best. I'd like to get it worked out with Gentoo if possible.

Ideas?

There's not really enough information here to do much troubleshooting, but a while ago, a user reported something vaguely similar. The problem in that case was that the system actually had two Creator cards in it, and that was
confusing the kernel. This leads to two questions:

1. What kernel are you using;
2. What video cards do you have in your U60?

Sorry to be so indecisive, but I am not familiar with your specific problem.

Regards,

Apologies for the lack of a good diagnostic post. :) Reasons being, it seems the details of my system are pretty mundane and/or seem to have no effect on the problem.

Specifics (as of now):

Kernel 2.4.29
SMP U60

Video card: Creator3D. Specifics ala dmesg:

Code:

Apr 10 02:47:34 hoss fb0: Creator 3D at 000001fc00000000 type 51 DAC 10
Apr 10 02:48:53 hoss [drm] Initialized ffb 0.0.1 20000517 on minor 0
Apr 10 02:48:53 hoss ffb0: Detected FFB2+/vertical

The last line of which is repeated a few times per boot. (Maybe each time I logout of X?)
AFAIK, there's only one video card in the machine. There's only one UPA slot being used, and there's only one monitor connection.

When the machine appears locked, I can SSH into it. I see X bogging down one processor. Killing X causes the machine to hardlock (eg, the machine stops cold .. SSH session freezes, intermittent HD activity stops, etc).

The kernel seems to be insignificant. I've had the problem with vanilla 2.4.29, 2.4.29-sparc, 2.6.6, 2.6.10. Also, it seems that whether or not DRI is being used has no effect (the string of three days of uptime I recently had, I had DRI enabled).

xorg installed:

Code:

[ebuild   R   ] x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r1

xorg has no patches other than what is shipped by default by gentoo. Basically, no other riff-raff -- all packages on my machine are stable sparc.

Hm. U60-SMP with ffb2+ is not uncommon. I have a U60-SMP(ffb2+, afb both installed) with no xorg related problems. Unless there's something unusual about your kernel .config, I don't have much more to offer. It would be interesting to see what happened if you swapped out your ffb2+ for another one.

Is there anything at all interesting in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file?

Sorry, I'm as lost as you are at this point.

Well, my xorg.conf is a near exact copy of one on your dev.g.o site. Short of comments, it is an exact copy. Listening to you, it sounds like that is ok.

As far as I can tell, my Xorg.0.log file looks ok. I've attached it for completeness. The only odd thing about it that might be affecting me:

Code:

(**) Option "Device" "/dev/sunmouse"
(**) Option "Emulate3Buttons" "false"
(==) Mouse0: Buttons: 3
(**) Mouse0: SmartScroll: 1
(**) Option "BaudRate" "1200"
(**) Mouse0: BaudRate: 1200

It's saying my mouse BaudRate is 1200. I've modified the sunmouse for 4800 baud operation. It seems to run at 4800 baud during use, so I'm not sure what this message means.

As for the .config, I'm not sure what could be odd here. FFB acceleration is built as a module.

I'll go hit ebay and see if I can pick up another Creator quick.

I still don't see any problem. At first reading, that all looks pretty normal.

Yes!

Replacing the Creator seemed to do the trick, but just replacing the card may not have been what have fixed the problem.

When I started putting other Creators in the box, they didn't work. Turns out, the video setting I had in the OBP for 1024x768 video wasn't supposed to work whatsoever with Creators; the refresh rate I had set was outside the supposed limits of Creator boards. I reset the OBP 'output-device' variable back to simply 'screen', and the new cards worked -- and work very stable.

It may very well have been what I had set in the OBP that was causing the trouble.

Who knows. At any rate, I'm enjoying X at 1152x900. I doubt I'll be doing any more experiments to see what part of the original setup was causing the trouble .. I'm just glad now to be able to be able to trust that the box will stay up when I work with X. :)

As a follwup: yes, my theory that the resolution/refresh rate set in the OBP was officially unsupported by Creator 3D cards was accurate. I'm running now at 1024x768. The page I referenced:

http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/806-6054-10/6jf195l29?a=view

I iterated through the different settings until I found a resolution/refresh rate that worked consistently. Some settings worked with Creator A but not Creator B; each model number acts a little differently.

Moral of story: if you have lockups like I describe, try different resolution/refresh rate settings until you find one that works.
