|
|
I've never attempted to install Gentoo before. I'm trying this on a Dell Laitiude CPi with a P2-233. I downloaded the .iso torrent and it md5summed fine. I burned it with Gnomebaker (twice), and both CDs lock up when trying to mount the cdrom. I've tried no boot options, and I've tried -nofb (which is the only way I can see everything on the screen).
To be more specific, here's what I get:
Code: | >> Loading modules
...
>> Mounting filesystems
>> Activating udev...
>> Activating Device-Mapper raid(s)...
(none)
>> Scanning for Volume Groups...
(none)
>> Activating Volume Groups...
>>Attempting to mount CD:- /newroot/dev/cdroms/cdrom0
*lockup* |
I let it sit at this point for a half-hour just to be sure. The only thing I can do is hold power for 5 secs to force shutdown.
Any suggestions?

Hi, ignavia,
When you build you kernel, did you build the CDROM support? How did you build it: as a module or in the kernel? What kind of file system did you use for CDROM? Did you build it's support in the kernel or as a module?
Thank you. |

I didn't build the kernel. I haven't done anything. I put the cd in and booted, and it won't fully boot. It freezes at the point I listed. |

There's a list of cheatcodes you can pass on to the CD like gentoo no{apic, agp, apm, audio, ddc}, no{pcmcia, scsi, swap, usb}, do{scsi, pcmcia} etc. I am not sure what these codes are in detail, but they should be somewhere on the server from which you downloaded the LiveCD - or someone could post a link here? Try them one at a time until the CD boots successfully.
Good luck! _________________ Regards,

Ooh! That sounds like fun!!
I'll try it when I get home, though. Any other ideas? |

I had a problem like this on an old machine I had and knoppix. The problem ended up being that the CDROM didnt support DMA, but the Knoppix CD was trying to access the CDROM using DMA. I don't recall if Gentoo is able to turn off DMA for liveCD boots or not, but if it is ... try turning off DMA (my guess is something like nodma in the boot command arguments). _________________ ~Matt |

"gentoo nodma" made no difference. |

Hi, ignavia,
Could you try to boot the Knoppix CD, or maybe the Windows CD?
We need to make sure that it's supported by Linux at all first.
What is you hardware configuration? What .iso image did you burn?
Thank you. |

YEah, Knoppix works fine, and Ubuntu's installed now. nodma is the wrong option. I needed "gentoo-nofb ide=nodma." Thanks. |

None of the options for boot would fix my machine. I had to physically swap ide cables so the live CD was finally happy. Does gentoo automagically assume all CD drives in the universe are on /dev/hda???? |
