Assuming you want to be able to handle the nroff source for man pages.

Assuming the following ways to invoke the various commands and filters:
troff command: /usr/bin/groff -Tps -mandoc
nroff command: /usr/bin/nroff -Tascii -c -mandoc
jnroff command: /usr/bin/groff -Tnippon -mandocj
eqn command: /usr/bin/geqn -Tps
neqn command: /usr/bin/geqn -Tlatin1
jneqn command: /usr/bin/geqn -Tnippon
tbl command: /usr/bin/gtbl
col command: /usr/bin/col

It seems that no col is needed, since you use groff.

Assuming that binaries go to /usr/bin, the configuration file
goes to /etc, makewhatis to /usr/sbin, and the man pages
to /usr/share/man/man*.

Assuming the following ways to invoke the various decompressors:
gunzip command: /bin/gunzip -c
bzip2 command: /bin/bzip2 -c -d
pcat command: missing
zcat command: /bin/zcat

Hi.

Someone has already opened a bug in https://bugs.gentoo.org. You should follow the developments there as you're not alone.

Same exact problem here, but I'm in the middle of a big update so will try again after I update some other things.

You can do the emerge by hand choosing the packages, not very practical, or you can block emerge from installing man-1.6. You can do that by adding the package name to /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask or editing /etc/portage/package.use.

I the guy on bugzilla is right it should be fixable by changing to MAKEOPTS="-j1" in make.conf. Trying that now.

Works. Just edit /etc/make.conf and set as mentioned. Set back after emerging.

for this temporary fix, instead of editing files, just do
Code:
MAKEOPTS="-j1" emerge man

Please test:

man-1.6.ebuild (Attachment #62312 of Bug #97439)
files/man-1.6-parallel-make.patch (Attachment #62312 of Bug #97439)

and report on Bug #97439.

You can see the diff of the ebuild on Comment #15 of Bug #97439

Reverse (if you did it) any modification on /etc/make.conf, leave MAKEOPTS="-j2"

:D
