Posted: Wed Feb 12, 2003 7:48 pm Post subject: GDM fails to start (Gnome too) PROBLEM SOLVED |
|
|
I just completed my install from scratch. I emerged gnome which failed twice but i managed to get it finished by restarting the emerge both times.
Now when I try to start gdm, the XServer tries to start several times and finally returns me to the console saying the initializing display 0 failed. so i cant get in Gnome. The weird thing is that startx works just fine.
The problem probably isnt with gdm though because if I set XSession=gnome, then startx fails also and returns me to the console.
Any thoughts?

EDIT-----------------------------------------------------------
i actually figured it out...
I first used normal startx with no XSESSION set. Then from twm i tried to start some gnome apps and i always got back some fontconfig error and none would start. The error messages were all related to fontconfig so I just reemerged fontconfig, did an fc-cache and now everything is in tip-top shape

I tried to reemerge gdm and the nvidia packages and it didnt work. If I comment the line reading "XSESSION=gnome" in rc.conf, I can startx without any problems....weird...
I did find this however which is weird since I have nothing related to kde or qt on my system which is built from scratch (i have USE="-kde -qt" in my USE flags). it is the file /var/log/xdm-errors :

I also am unable to get my nvidia card working with gnome 2.2. As of now I am using the basic VESA drivers until I figure out what is going on. |
