Was wondering if there is a recommended proceedure in backing up and restoring mail between 2 machines running Mozilla Thunderbird? I have a hard drive about ready to die and I would desperately like to backup about 1200 emails to CD so that I might restore these to a new Gentoo box also running Thunderbird. I see no method from within the application to archieve this data to disk but perhaps I am missing the obvious.

You should be able to simply copy thunderbird's Mail files

If you haven't modified the default thunderbird setup:
Code:
cp -R ~/.thunderbird/<profile_directory>/Mail/* /some/backup/folder

tar -cpf mail.tar.gz ~/.thunderbird/<profile_directory>/Mail/

This will compress the mail dir , then tar xvf /file name / to un tar it

This will save space during the whole back up and restore process and while you install another hdd
