PostPosted: Wed Feb 12, 2003 8:59 am    Post subject: OpenOffice and emerge world Reply with quote

I have installed OpenOffice in another language (spanish). And would like to know if i will be able to update this package in the future by emerging world.

Another thing (a little ooftopic?), i was looking the way to install packages trhough portage but in spanish. Is some way to do it? (for example like OO)

Thanks

PD: the installation time was like 3 or 4 minutes, but if i emerge openoffice it takes more than 2 or 3 hours. Why is that? thnx again

The time factor is related to wether you use the source emerge or the binary emerge, the minutes one is based off the binary install, the other from source. If you want to use the spanish package then my advice would be to use the spanish binary and use it when issuing
Code:
emerge app-office/openoffice-bin

Code:

If you issue the command
Code:
emerge app-office/openoffice-bin

You will see the emerge try and fetch a binary (english) OO*tar.gz archive.

You have the spanish archive, and with to use that, so either make a link to it with the name of the ebuild requested file, or just rename the spanish tar ball to OOo_1.0.1_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz

You will then need to rebuild the digest file so that the emerge process does not complain about md5sums
Code:
ebuild /usr/portage/app-office/openoffice-bin/openoffice-1.0.2.ebuild digest

Yeah, but you are using the binary version so it would rarely ever take a long time to update, and OO releases are few and far between at this stage so I dont think you would need to worry that often.

Besides, reading the list from emerge -up world would tell you when an update is going to happen, then you will need to take the appropriate actions again.

Rename the tar.gz file to the english.
# emerge app-office/openoffice-bin
and be careful with the emerge world

That's it, rith?

Thanks a lot!!

You will need to regenerate the digest file with
Code:
ebuild /usr/portage/app-office/openoffice-bin/openoffice-1.0.2.ebuild digest

Before you emerge app-office/openoffice-bin, but other than that yes spot on :D
