Hi,

I recently loaded the mechinstaller files onto my xbox and successfully ran them, but now I am having trouble proceeding with the installation of a full linux system

I have a v1.0 Xbox with a 10gig seagate hard drive. I would like to install gentoo on it, and i noticed that gentoo has put out a 2.6 xbox sources kernel recently, so i think i should be ready for it.

The problem is that i want my xbox to stay softmoded, and while a lot of the original xbox linux distros started out for softmod, all of their requirements seem to have progressed to requiring a modchip. It also seems that most of the resources that I could find are also involving a modchip.

I was wondering if anyone had any online resources that could point me in the right direction for getting gentoo on my xbox while still enableing it to play games.

If you are willing to do some simple soldering on your xbox motherboard to be able to flash a new BIOS on then you won't need a mod chip and can do this (I just did the soldering two days ago, I'm 15 and know nothing about soldering; I went to town on an old 56k Phone Jack PCI card to practice, and then did a sucessful sodler on the motherboard).

1) Back up the MS BIOS with raincoat, store it in a very very very safe place and then flash your TSOP with Cromwell-2.40
2) Swap out your xbox hard drive for a newer and biger one. (not so hard since you will have your xbox open when doing the soldering)
3) Smile, you have a fully Linux enabled XBox.

To revert back to the old state of things, without any trace of linux:

1) Re-flash the MS BIOS.
2) Swap back in the origional xbox hard drive.

I'm in exactly the same situation as you, Bitwaba. I'll post here if I find an answer.

Softmod will work just the same, you'll just load a new BIOS through the mod and it shouldn't make a difference

http://forums.xbox-scene.com has a ton of great info

I prefer the modchip method though, its quite worth it.

Since we're on the subject, what modchips are people using? I was looking at the Xenium Spice one, as I am a clod with a soldering iron. I plan on picking up a used Xbox at a local gaming shop to use for Mythtv.
