Hello,

Im trying to move alot of sound and images from a reiserFS partition to an OSX partition, but my problem is alot of the files contain norwegian characters. Im using tar, and then copying the tar over and extract. However, the OSX tar refuse to decode the files containing norwegian characters. It simply skips them - which is completely unacceptable. The error message is "Cannot open: Invalid argument" when processing a file containing the norwegian characters.

Both my linux install and OSX, is utf8 to my knowledge. According to man tar I can use --posix or --format=posix when creating and extracting the archive and tar will manage the filename encoding automagically. However, on the OSX side this does not work at all so Im completely lost. I even tried compiling gnutar and using it to extract the files on OSX, but it behaved exactly the same as BSD tar (which does not support posix).

Any suggestions? (Renaming the files is not an option ;-)

You could try another tool than tar, like bzip2, zip, rar or something? To see if they handle the filenames better.
