I had the same problem when I was using Gnome in Fedora Core 2. I think it had some thing to do with the resolution...
Yeah. I googled it: look here at the bottom of the page-->http://www.stokebloke.com/gentoo/index.php
Go to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and change the default depth from 16 to 24. (EDIT: I forgot to mention that you'll have to restart X)
I dont reallly know, but I think the DefaultFbbpp is for frame buffers, so you probably don't need it.

Also, unless its gone through some MAJOR changes (which I doubt), the gmplayer gui thing SUCKS. I hate(d) it and found the command-line-or-however-you-call-it mplayer way faster and easier to use. But that's me. I was on a 450MHz Celeron(coppermine) that shouldn't have really been playing movies anyway. I still wince at the endless hours of horrible headache-inducing frame drops. (~50 hrs a week for ~6 months on that machine. Jebus.) Curse my (now seemingly fading) anime addiction!
