Random lines and marks on screen in X.

I just upgraded to an Athlon 64 and am running in AMD64 mode. Since I made the change, I have noticed strange lines
and marks on my computer flicker on and off the screen. In general, they are mostly flat lines about 1cm thick, sometimes dashed. Occasionally, a thicker or slightly angled mark will appear. They are always black or white. For example, if I scroll a web page or switch desktops, several of these marks will appear. If I move again, they will go away and new ones will appear. Sometimes there are few of them, but sometime there are many. It can make reading text annoying.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this or have any idea why this might happen?

I'm running xorg-6.8.2-r1 on a dual screen ATI Radeon VE (7000) with xinerama. The marks appear on both screens and never appeared with the same video card and xorg on my previous computer, an Intel P4 Celeron.

While I'm at it, let me thank those of you that post answers to these forums. Although this is my first time posting, I've been helped greatly by posts I've read before.
