I think gentoo, and well, all of linux is great for getting work done, and very stable and such, but still lacks in being a fun operating system. I find I'm getting really bored when I'm on my computer. Usually I have amsn and xmms open, or maybe I'm writing in openoffice, but when I'm done, and don't want to talk to my friends, I have no way to kill time. I do have a few games, but most of them just get old really fast, and half of them don't even work for my amd64 installation.
Does anyone have any suggestions of applications, or ideas for making my gentoo fun? |

Develop or learn to develop programs, research things that are of interest to you, or simply find a good book to read B-) _________________ Time is what keeps everything from happening all at once. |

Yeah, I tried programming with kdevelop, I know a little bit of C++ for windows, so I thought I'd try programming with Qt. Anyways, I tried compiling the hello world project just to test, and I did build automake & friends and then tried to run configure.
It ended in this:
Code: |
checking for KDE...
configure: error:
in the prefix, you've chosen, are no KDE headers installed. This will fail.
So, check this please and use another prefix!

I use amd64 and I always have these missing file problems. How do I fix this?
And If I can get it to compile I need some howto or tutorial for programming with Qt widgets and such through kdevlop. |

QT Designer is a point and click interface for designing your interface. I thought documentation came with KDevelop, but I could be wrong. Did you emerge kdsk, the development kit? _________________ Time is what keeps everything from happening all at once. |

I never get bored with gentoo linux, There is always an interesting package or libraries to play with. I wish I have more time. There are tons of stuff to learn. If you have time you can always start a new project, who knows it can take off in the future and become a major part of linux. For example work on a compressed file system that can be written on it on the fly or port Suse yast to gentoo or make ebuilds which is not in the portage like xen, kolab server, beagle, ...... |

Actually for me its quite the contrary. Ever since I switched from Windows to Gentoo, just using my computer on a day to day basis has become more fun.
Its a lot of tiny other things, but portage is also a big part of it. Portage is kind of like a online store for software, directly integrated into your OS. With the big difference that most of the software in it is free and legal.
Then there's also other things, like networking. I mean, if I was running windows, I would probably never have considered to have more than one computer, except desktop&laptop. But my old PC is my router/server/sync host/dns/etc.... |

I think what will really make gentoo fun is making my own apps. I emerged kdesdk though, and I still get a compile error, same one I always get. |
